Trae Young had himself a game on Friday. Yes, the game went to four overtimes helping inflate everyone’s stats across the board, but 49 points is always an accomplishment—for a rookie who struggled at the start of the year, it’s a milestone moment.
The Hawks ultimately lost that game but seeing what Young can do is as good as any victory at this point in their rebuild.
In total, he went for 49 points, 16 assists, eight rebounds and shot 6-of-13 from the three-point line (46.2 percent).

Against Chicago, the Hawks need to do a better job of locking down on Zach LaVine. The Bulls guard went for 47, 9 and 9 while hoisting up 35 shots.
Again, I recognize that this is an inflated stat line considering the total minutes played, but it’s also the most points scored from anyone on Chicago’s roster that night by 16 points.
LaVine will always be the focal point, and that won’t change on Sunday.

Chicago Bulls
Like the Hawks, the Bulls need to lock in on Young. The only player who came close to Young’s 49 points was Alex Len off the bench with 24. The next-highest scoring starter for Atlanta was Taurean Prince with 17.

At this point, it’s very clear that Young, despite his ridiculously long shooting range and ability to drive and kick, is turnover prone. That’s not uncommon among young guards, and it’s quite honestly a common trait of most high-usage stars throughout history.
Young has said he idolized Steve Nash and always considered him from Nash than Curry, which makes sense considering Nash—one of the greatest floor generals the league has ever seen—was also a high-turnover point guard.
All that said, on a one-game basis, Young won’t define his legacy but he could certainly lose a ball game with bad turnovers—if the Bulls are able to both force him into bad situations and also take full advantage on the other end.
