On Thursday, February 24th, the Atlanta Hawks are on the road to face the Chicago Bulls for the third of four matches this season. Chicago won both prior meetings on December 27th (130-118) and 29th (131-117). They’ll play once more with Atlanta hosting on March 3rd.
Both teams played the Wednesday (February 16th) prior to the break with Atlanta defeating the Magic 130-109 while Chicago entered the break on a five-game win streak defeating the Kings 125-118 in their last match.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Hawks sweeping the regular-season series. The Bulls hold the all-time record having bested the Hawks in 134 of their 250 matches.
Atlanta Hawks
With the Hawks underachieving to this point in the season they hit the stretch run needing to create their own momentum in order to get back into the mix of teams vying for the Eastern crown.
They sit in the final play-in spot (10th) tied with the Hornets and five games back of the sixth seed that would get them directly into the playoffs.
With only 23 games remaining the challenge to do much more than move up the play-in seeding is precarious at best.
Helping their cause is they have the fifth easiest strength of schedule to close the season with 13 road games and 10 home games remaining and the Hawks 11-17 on the road to date.
Two segments of the schedule will be taxing with six of their first eight games back from the break against top eight seeds.
The second tough segment occurs at the end of the schedule when they’ll face four top-eight seeds in their final six matches (Cavs, Nets, Raptors, Heat). Albeit, if any of those clubs have cemented their seed they may rest some core players which could help Atlanta.
John Collins (foot) missed the last three games prior to the break with a foot injury and remains listed as out indefinitely.
Chicago Bulls
The Bulls navigated the absence of Lonzo Ball and Alex Caruso staying in the mix for the top seed in the East. Prior to the break head coach Billy Donovan stated Caruso was seven to 10 days away from practicing which would mean some time this week.
Chicago needs the duo back on the court specifically for their defense with the most important objective being to get them back and into game shape for the postseason.
To close out the season the Bulls have the second most difficult strength of schedule with 13 road games, 10 home games, and facing 15 teams seeded eighth or higher.
Zach LaVine (back) is listed as probable while Ayo Dosunmu (thumb) is questionable for Thursday.
Derrick Jones Jr. (knee), Lonzo Ball (knee), and Alex Caruso (wrist) remain out. Patrick Williams (thumb) is out for the season.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Bulls are 6-4 in their last 10 meetings against each other
- The Bulls are 6-4 ATS in the last 10 matches versus each other
- The over/under is 6-4 in the team’s last 10 head to head matches
- Atlanta is 11-5 ATS in their last 16 games.
- Chicago is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 4 of Atlanta’s last 5 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 9 of Chicago’s last 12 games.
Atlanta Hawks vs. Chicago Bulls NBA Analysis:
Missing their two defensive stalwarts the Bulls will be happy to face the Hawks who still haven’t shown a penchant to play defense on a consistent basis.
This match could easily become a track meet as both clubs try to win via their offense but with the Bulls playing to a defensive scheme missing their best defenders. That’s probably why the spread is so low but I still like the Bulls to win and cover.
