Wednesday, March 16th the Atlanta Hawks play the Charlotte Hornets for the fourth and final time this season. The Hawks lead the series 2-1 with wins on November 20th (115-105) and January 23rd (113-91) while the Hornets took the December 5th contest (130-127).
These two clubs hold the ninth and 10th seeds a half-game separating them so this match has major seeding implications. Since the Heat top the division if the Hawks were to win they would own the tiebreaker or if Charlotte can even the series then the next level of breaking the tie would be used.
The Hawks last played Monday defeating the Blazers 122-113 while the Hornets defeated the Thunder 134-113 also on Monday.
Last season, the squads played three times with Charlotte winning two of the three regular-season contests. The Hawks hold the all-time record having bested the Hornets in 67 of their 125 matches.
Atlanta Hawks
Trae Young has been on fire lately and leading his team via that scoring outburst with three consecutive wins including versus the Clippers, Pacers, and Blazers. Against the Clippers, he registered a double-double of 27 points and 11 assists.
Young followed up that performance flirting with a 50 point scoring effort but fell just short scoring 47 against the Pacers and 46 against the Blazers.
Something else that has shifted is suddenly he’s drawing fouls again for those “iffy” offensive moves that the league began the season clamping down on but seem to have forgotten about.
Case in point, in the past three matches he’s been to the line 12, 14, and 11 times respectively. Some of the calls are expected but the refs are definitely allowing him to do unnatural movements by leaping into defenders and rewarding him for his efforts.
Whether that continues will likely depend on the officiating crew and once the play-in/playoffs arrive the refs may revert back to not making those calls but for now he’s taking advantage of the liberal whistle.
Danilo Gallinari (Achilles) is upgraded to probable while John Collins (finger) is downgraded to out on Wednesday versus the Hornets.
Charlotte Hornets
While the Hawks are on the three-game win streak and have won five of seven the Hornets lost some ground playing .500 ball (4-4) through their last eight matches.
Diving a bit deeper into the schedule, Charlotte is pummelling the sub .500 teams and struggling against the more elite clubs. In the last two games, they put up 142 points on the shorthanded Pelicans and 134 on the tanking Thunder.
But the two games prior were losses to the Celtics and Nets where they scored 101 and 121 points respectively while allowing 130 and 127 points. It seems like they have reverted back to the run and gun style that the club began the season playing which is fun to watch on one end.
Unfortunately, it’s exceedingly frustrating on the defensive end of the floor where the Hornets elect to play zone occasionally but otherwise seem disinterested in locking down to stop the opponent’s offense.
James Bouknight (neck) is upgraded to probable for Wednesday. Gordon Hayward (ankle) is out indefinitely.

Free Atlanta Hawks vs. Charlotte Hornets NBA Prediction:
Knowing both teams love offense and can take or leave their defensive game plan this match has the potential to be an extremely high-scoring affair unless their coaches can convince them to commit on that side of the court.
I’m not holding my breath Nate McMillan or James Borrego would win that battle. So, expect Trae Young to shoot for 50 points again while the Hornets will be more than happy to fly down the wings and put up copious points.
