January 23rd the Atlanta Hawks play the Charlotte Hornets for the third time this regular season. The Hawks won the initial match on November 20th (115-105) while the Hornets won the second meeting on December 5th (130-127). The Southeast Division rivals will wrap up their season series in Charlotte on March 16th.
Both teams last played on Friday with the Hawks pulling out a big 110-108 win versus the Heat while the Hornets routed the Thunder 121-98.
Last season, the squads played three times with Charlotte taking two of the three contests. The Hawks hold the all-time record having bested the Hornets in 66 of their 124 matches.
With fans voting Trae Young into the starting All-Star lineup I wonder how this plays with the rest of the Hawks. Players and media votes still need to be counted and it will be very intriguing to see where he gets slotted by that group given Atlanta’s record.
Will his peers reward a player who they know has to defend the opponent’s fifth offensive option and often doesn’t even pretend to give the effort to defend? I’m not sure that’s a great message to send the youngster.
The reason is last year when Nate McMillan took over the coaching helm he sat Young down asking him to 1) pass the ball more so his teammates felt involved and 2) at least give effort on the defensive end.
Young acquiesced doing both but then the playoffs arrived and the lure of being the center of attention in the spotlight took over. Look he’s an incredible offensive talent although I’m not a fan of how he seeks free throws (still) or gets away with egregious fouling still there is no denying his talent.
My prediction is if Young gets rewarded for how he’s playing now the Hawks won’t improve in the second half because he’ll assume he can keep doing precisely the same thing while his teammates will get fed up for having to work harder on defense because he feels he doesn’t have to.
Danilo Gallinari (Achilles) and Bogdan Bogdanovic (knee) are both questionable.
Miles Bridges began the season on a terror and then after missing some games in protocol and the Hornets suffering some losses seemed to regress back to the mean. But in the past week, he’s reinserted himself back into the conversation as one of the top candidates for Most Improved Player.
His ascent has coincided with the Hornets winning six of their last seven matches. Ironically, Charlotte took down some quality teams including the Bucks (twice), and 76ers plus dispensed of the Knicks and Celtics who lumped in the same portion of the ladder as the Hornets. Ironically, their lone loss in this stretch occurred versus Orlando.
During the seven-game stint, Bridges is averaging 22.6 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.9 assists typically with at least one jaw-dropping dunk included in each match. The highlight of this series occurred versus the Knicks when Bridges dropped a 38 point, 12 rebound double-double.
Jalen McDaniels (ankle) is downgraded to out Sunday.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Hawks are 7-13 ATS in their last 20 games.
- The Hornets are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 5 of Atlanta’s last 5 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 6 of Charlotte’s last 7 games.
Free Atlanta Hawks vs. Charlotte Hornets NBA Prediction:
Charlotte has won seven of eight while the Hawks seemingly exorcised whatever demon caused them to lose 10 straight at home as they strung together three wins in a row all at State Farm Arena. Early in the season, Atlanta struggled on the road so with the home cooking working will they struggle on the road again?
The last time the clubs played they combined for 257 points – – 21 points more than the projected betting total. Yet, the running narrative is the reason for both teams’ recent success is tied to a renewed focus on defense.
The question is whether the lure of an up and down track meet will supersede McMillan and Borrego’s game plans. Either way, I’m more impressed with the Hornets recent ascent.
