The Hawks were in action on Sunday and played one of their best games of the season in a 24-point drubbing of the Miami Heat.
Miami shot just 5-for-35 from 3-point range and under 40 percent for the game. The Hawks got double-digits from five guys, including a team-high nineteen out of Trae Young and fifteen off the bench from Jeremy Lin.
Atlanta did it without three regular guys: Miles Plumlee, Kent Bazemore and Taurean Prince. Bazemore will be out for at least another week. The other two guys could be back for Tuesday’s game in Toronto.
Atlanta has already lost by double-digits to Toronto once this season. They’ll have to deal with the Raptors the day before playing this game in Brooklyn. The Nets have already routed the Hawks at the Barclays Center once this year, too.
That was right in the middle of December, when Brooklyn was just starting out on its current 12–4 run that has thrust it into the playoffs, if the season ended today in the Eastern Conference.
As of Tuesday, Brooklyn is the 8-seed in the East, a game clear of Detroit. The way things are trending, the Nets should only widen that gap over the rest of the Eastern Conference weaklings.
D’Angelo Russell has been playing terrific basketball as the starting point guard and Shabazz Napier is making his life easier as his starting wingman. Napier matched a career-high with 32 points in a loss to Milwaukee at the end of December. He’s hit double-figures in six consecutive.
That has left Spencer Dinwiddie to really thrive off the bench. He’s averaging better than seventeen and five assists.
Joe Harris didn’t play against the Celtics on Monday; nor did Allen Crabbe, who will miss another week, at least, or Caris LeVert, who is obviously out for a while.
With Russell’s free-agency impending, you have to wonder how much of a priority he’ll be with all the guards on the roster.
