2023 NBA Handicapping
While the 2022 rookie class isn’t nearly as jam-packed as last season’s group there are still a number of high-end talents that will vie for the award. In a bit of an oddity last season there were numerous rookies who not only got run in the postseason but played pivotal roles.
This season it’s more likely the rookies who’ll occupy the top of the leaderboard each week will be playing on teams who failed to make the playoffs in 2022 and are attempting to return to that standard.
Paolo Banchero (+194)
The top draft pick in this year’s class is also the player pegged by Vegas to take home the hardware next June for Rookie of the Year. Being selected first isn’t a guarantee to win the RoY honors with only seven top picks winning in the last 20 years and none in the last five years.
Karl-Anthony Towns was the last top draft pick to win the award in 2015-16 although Ben Simmons won in 2017-18 technically he won the year after his draft as he was forced to redshirt his inaugural season due to a foot injury.
Despite being selected first by the Orlando Magic it’s not a given Banchero will reap the rewards but with Chet Holmgren suffering a season-ending injury the odds are more in favor of the Duke forward.
Like the 2022 Rookie of the Year, Scottie Barnes, Banchero arrives at the pros with an NBA-ready body (6’10, 250 lbs) and a toolbox full of transferable skills.
Banchero can score in the post or from the field and is a skilled passer whose game is arguably a better fit for the pros than college. The Duke forward should be a great fit beside Franz Wagner who excelled in his rookie campaign last year.
The Magic front court depth gets a boost this season particularly at the forward position with the addition of Bol Bol via trade, Admiral Schofield on a two-way contract, and the return of Jonathan Isaacs who missed all of last season recovering from copious knee injuries.
Even with this depth at forward, it’s likely Banchero will be tapped to fit beside Franz Wagner as the Magic attempt to build their future core.
Keegan Murray (+500)
If the trend of recent seasons continues then Keegan Murray may have the best chance to win Rookie of the Year. While the oddsmakers rank him second behind Banchero, he does have the advantage of landing on a team with debatably more talent and one that is primed to take a step.
The Kings are desperate to break out of the slump that has witnessed Sacramento miss the last 16 post-seasons.
Murray was the Vegas Summer League MVP showcasing a more mature game than many of his counterparts. The forward played in four games averaging 23.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.3 steals.
He is adept at shooting from all areas of the court which he showcased in Vegas averaging 50 percent from the field and a robust 40 percent from deep.
Jaden Ivey (+550)
Detroit has focused on tanking the past few seasons as they rebuild their core but may be ready to take a minor step and vie for a play-in seed this season.
Jaden Ivey is a player who could help in that effort if he meshes well with Cade Cunningham and the other young assets on the Pistons.
Jabari Smith (+610)
Many expected Smith to be the top draft pick but he fell to third and to Houston. While that was a bit of a surprise playing alongside Rockets youngsters Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun is arguably a much better fit for Smith.
The Rockets are predominantly a roster full of youth (aside from Eric Gordon) so Smith should get ample playing time and opportunity.
Although he ranks fourth in the Vegas odds keep an eye on him as the dark horse to win RoY along with the sixth overall pick Bennedict Mathurin of the Pacers.
