2023 NBA Handicapping
Overseas players dominate the top of the board for players projected to win the Most Valuable Player of the Year for 2023.
Luka Doncic (+410)
When he was drafted into the NBA he set personal goals including winning MVP by his fifth season which is this year. Doncic has been the favorite the past two seasons but lost to Nikola Jokic.
Part of the issue was Doncic arrived to camp out of shape and therefore got off to a slow start needing to work his way into peak form. This year the scenario is different as he got into shape for Euro ball and arrived in Dallas in the best shape he’s been in to start a new season.
In 2021-22 Doncic averaged 28.4 points, 9.1 rebounds, 8.7 assists, and 1.2 steals per game. He shot 35.3 percent from the perimeter on 8.8 attempts.
Of all the top-ranked players to win MVP, Doncic is the one player without another All-Star on his squad. Therefore if his stats are close to the other contenders and the Mavericks finish with a home-court seed he’ll have the edge over his competition.
Joel Embiid (+530)
The 76ers big man coveted this trophy but lost out the past two seasons to fellow center Jokic. On media day Embiid said he’d given up trying to win awards but remember this is the same guy who said he wouldn’t get shady on social media anymore — and yeah that lasted about a month into last season.
This year he might be in the best spot to collect the trophy given James Harden got into much better shape this offseason and Daryl Morey bolstered the team’s depth by adding grit and 3-point shooting.
Despite the past four seasons being split between two players voters tend to want to reward someone new and jump on a different narrative. If the 76ers win the East and Embiid stays healthy his chances of winning increase exponentially.
Giannis Antetokounmpo (+560)
In 2021-22 Antetokounmpo’s stats were certainly worthy of consideration averaging 29.9 points, 11.6 rebounds, 5.8 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.4 blocks. Antetokounmpo is only 27-years old so is just at the precipice of his prime.
Kevin Durant (+890)
It’s sort of surprising Durant has only won the regular season MVP on a single occasion and that was during his tenure with the OKC Thunder (2013-14).
For KD to be in the mix to win MVP this season it would require him playing enough games and the Nets finishing in one of the top two Eastern Conference seeds.
Both things could happen but it’s far more likely Brooklyn rests KD in back-to-back games and are extremely cautious with any slight injury given his past and age.
Nikola Jokic (+920)
Three players have three-peated winning the MVP (Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Larry Bird) and 10 players won in consecutive seasons with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and LeBron James doing the repeat twice.
Jokic is the 2-time reigning MVP but had to put up historic numbers last season and still wasn’t the runaway winner.
