2023 NBA Defensive Player of the Year Odds
Have you swung by Cappers Picks today looking for 2023 NBA Defensive Player of the Year Handicapping Odds? Defense is cited as the most important aspect of winning a title and with that Cappers looks at the players with the best odds of winning the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year.
2023 NBA Handicapping
Although the Defensive Player of the Year has been dominated by big men, 2022 witnessed Celtics guard Marcus Smart break the trend becoming the first guard since 1995-96 when Gary Payton won the award.
This season it’s likely a big man or wing will take the honor again with former winners of the hardware ranking at the top of the projected win list.
Rudy Gobert (+400)
A three-time winner of the award, Gobert returns to the top of the oddsmakers list. After nine years in Utah with the Jazz, Gobert switches homes following his blockbuster trade to the Minnesota Timberwolves this past offseason.
The Frenchman will line up beside Karl-Anthony Towns forming a new Twin Towers frontcourt with arguably the best offensive center and best defensive center in the NBA.
While the Wolves have feasted offensively under the tutelage of head coach Chris Finch they made strides last season improving from their 28th-ranked defense in 2020-21 to 13th in 2021-22.
Minnesota gave up two of their better defenders Patrick Beverley and Jarred Vanderbilt in the trade but retained solid defenders, Jordan McLaughlin, and Naz Reid. It’s anticipated Anthony Edwards will take another leap this season and alongside Gobert, the Wolves hope to become a top-10 defensive club.
If successful, Gobert will be the favorite to win his fourth Defensive Player of the Year award.
Bam Adebayo (+510)
Every season the Heat find themselves ranked among the very best defensive clubs in the association behind the creative genius of head coach Erik Spoelstra. While there are many stellar defenders on the Miami squad, it’s Bam Adebayo who captains the defense and led the squad to a top-four defensive ranking in 2021-22.
Adebayo is a new-age big man capable of battling down low and agile enough to defend out to the perimeter and provide on-man defense for all five positions.
Draymond Green (+750)
Another former winner of DPoY (2016-17) is Draymond Green who is considered the smartest defender in the association. During his 10 years in the league, the enigmatic big man has made All-Defense on seven occasions.
Green could opt out of his contract at season end which would make him a free agent for the first time in his career.
Prior to his injury last season Green was considered the favorite to win the award and with the prospect of negotiating a juicy contract at season end, many expect him to vie for his second DPoY award to bolster those odds.
Then again, the recent dust-up in practice where he was caught sucker punching Jordan Poole could work against the Dubs wanting to keep dealing with his shenanigans. Either way, expect Green to be committed to making a mark this season.
Giannis Antetokounmpo (+850)
Among his many awards, Antetokounmpo has won DPoY once (2019-20) and been All-Defense on five occasions. The Bucks’ defense flows through the Greek Freak who is one of very few players who could potentially earn both MVP and Defensive Player of the Year in the same season.
