The Southwest has the biggest division favourite coming into the season with Houston and you can see scenarios where there might not even be another team that makes the playoffs from this group. Still there is excitement to see how young New Orleans team might not come together.

After Houston, San Antonio and Dallas are the next best teams but their strength might be on the sidelines with veteran coaches Greg Popovitch and Rick Carlisle. I can see those guys pushing their teams to success.
Southwest Division 2019 Odds: Houston Rockets (-250)
Whether you like him or not there you cannot dispute the greatness of James Harden. However, Houston believed that they had gone as far as they could with their old makeup so they made a big trade, bringing in Russell Westbrook as their new second star. Westbrook is awesome but will be mesh with Harden any better than Chris Paul did. We are excited to find out.
The role players that will surround those two are mostly the same from a year ago. Eric Gordon is one of the best shooters in the league and Clint Capela an alley-oop machine but will in translate to enough when it matters in the playoffs. Houston should have an easy time getting another division title. .
Southwest Division 2019 Odds: San Antonio Spurs (+450)
The core of San Antonio is intact too. DeMar DeRozan was key to the deal that sent Kawhi Leonard to Toronto (who won the title) but he also played well with San Antonio. His scoring was down a little but his rebounding and assists were up. LaMarcus Aldridge still have game too, the problem is neither is a dominant player.

Derrick White keeps growing his game. He can play three position on the floor and defend well and his improvement is something that could make the team better. Beyond him there is not a lot of room for growth, just a bunch of solid NBA veterans.
Southwest Division 2019 Odds: Dallas Mavericks (+800)
The success of Dallas will depend on Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis. Luka proved last year that they hype wa real. He had a wonderful rookie season as both a scorer and playmaker. The question is whether he can keep it up. Especially if Kristaps is around. Porzingis is a fine player but has not in a long time and might not be full ready for every game this season.
The cast surrounding those two is just OK. Tim Hardaway Jr. is a proven scorer but does not offer much else. Delon Wright can be a sneaky good PG as a passer, defender and occasional scorer. He could play the two if they want to go with Jalen Brunson at the 1. If their stars are healthy and can play well together this team could be on the rise in the division and the conference.
Southwest Division 2019 Odds: New Orleans Pelican (+1000)
New Orleans had the top pick in the draft and chose Zion Williamson. No surprise there. Physically he looks ready but we will see how he can perform soon enough. The rest of the team is intriguing as there is not much clarity other than Jrue Holiday being their top scorer.
[dfads params=’groups=20599&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
With the draft and other acquisitions New Orleans could field a unit of all former Duke Blue Devils if they want to. I am not advising it but I am sure someone will think of it. They could also put out units of just rookie with Zion and Jaxson Hayes leading the way. For these guys I can’t wait for the season to start to see how it comes together.
Southwest Division 2019 Odds: Memphis Grizzlies (+10000)
Memphis had a great draft. They took Ja Morant to replace Mike Conley with the second pick in the draft and then took Brandon Clarke, everybody’s sleeper at 21. Both should have long careers in the NBA and are upgrades. This team may not be as dearth as you think given those long odds.
Toronto made a trade with Memphis on the way to the title last season. Jonas Valanciunas was acquired and played. well. He is not elite but he is an efficient scorer and rebounder. He and Jaren Jackson give them a strong front line.
The challenge is that Memphis is squishy in the middle at 2 and 3. Taylor Jenkins is a new coach and I am curious to see if he adopts the rough and tumble approach of his predecessors.

Southwest Division: 2019 Prediction Houston to Win
There is not a ton of value on the Rockets but I don’t see any other team with the ability to rise up, unless injuries strike. I definitely see Dallas more of a threat than San Antonio. Their ceiling is much higher.
2019 Southwest Division Prediction
Rockets -250 is the bet. I am not sure you can make this bet as a future play but I would be all over fading the Spurs. Aldridge could decline quickly and they do not have any players who seem destined for a lot more.
I could see it unravelling quickly and all the other teams taking advantage.
