All-Star Saturday Night | (3rd Event)
This year’s Dunk Contest class doesn’t have a lot of pop to it, but there’s a very specific reason that’s exciting: Anybody can win.
As far as. bettors are concerned, this is a tough class to choose a winner from, but it also means we may get a close competition, which is always good from an entertainment standpoint.
John Collins 2019 NBA Slam Dunk Contest Odds +200
Collins is an interesting choice from oddsmakers to lead the way at +200. It’s not often that a big man earns the title, and while this is no fault of their own, dunks simply look less impressive coming from a near-7-footer.
That said, Collins has insane leap-out-the-gym athleticism and can look pretty impressive flying through the air despite already being so close to the rim.
So far this season, approximately 36 percent of his made field-goals have been dunks.
Miles Bridges 2019 NBA Slam Dunk Contest Odds +225
Miles Bridges may not be a big name across casual fan circles at this point, but he’s earned a bit of a reputation as a dunker. After all, you can’t pull off something like this and not get some kind of recognition.
Bridges and Dennis Smith Jr. are tied for second-best odds to win the dunk contest behind the favorite Collins. But if we had to pick one or the other, we actually like Bridges for one reason: home-court advantage.
On All-Star Weekend, whichever home crowd is hosting, they make sure to show their faith for their hometown players.
In the three-point contest and All-Star Game, that’ll be Kemba Walker. In this one, it’s Bridges.
Dennis Smith Jr. 2019 NBA Slam Dunk Contest Odds +225
Dennis Smith Jr. was the most notable return piece for the New York Knicks in the Kristaps Porzingis trade that took place about a week before Thursday’s trade deadline. He’ll be a good piece for their future backcourt, but he’s also a good bet to win the Dunk Contest.
Where Smith has an advantage over Collins is that his underwhelming size helps avoid his dunks from looking…well…underwhelming.
Smith has quite possibly the most explosion of any dunker in this contest. Expect a lot of gimmicks (like props) from someone like Collins. Expect a lot of flair and creativity in the dunks themselves from DSJ.
Hamidou Diallo 2019 NBA Slam Dunk Contest Odds +300
Hamidou Diallo is a relative unknown even to some diehard fans and he was a replacement for the Miami Heat’s Derrick Jones Jr. He’s more of a toss-in when it comes to the rest of the competitors, and while he’s had some moments where he puts his 40-plus-inch vertical on display in games, it’d be tough to put your money down on someone so unknown.
Although, that’s kind of where the intrigue lies, isn’t it?
