Atlantic Division 2019 Odds: Philadelphia 76ers (2/5)
There is only one favorite to win this division and it’s Philadelphia at -250. Not only do the Sixers return the core of Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid, and Tobias Harris, they took Al Horford from Boston.
Horford was the Celtics’ best player last season and really only steady big man. He had Embiid’s number. Now he will team up with Embiid to create one of the most intriguing 1-2 big man combinations in the game.

Of course, Jimmy Butler walked in free-agency but Horford will be a better fit anyway. The move frees up Tobias Harris to be the primary offensive threat on the wing and makes Philly a potential defensive stalwart.
But until Ben Simmons takes the leap, I’ll remain a skeptic. I believe there is way too much that could go wrong for Philly this season to take them at that price over Boston.
Atlantic Division 2019 Odds: Boston Celtics (9/2)
The Celtics are ridiculously small. They were small last season and then they lost both Horford and Aaron Baynes, who played well for the Celtics in doses but inexplicably returned a first-round pick from the Phoenix Suns.
The C’s may be a year off but I’m still intrigued by the price here. Kemba Walker is in and Kyrie Irving is out. Walker wants to be in Boston and he won the fans over immediately. Finally, he will get a chance to compete.
He, Marcus Smart, Jaylen Brown, and Jason Tatum make up the core of the team. If they can play on the floor together and do okay on the glass, Boston will be dangerous, especially if Brown can defend either Embiid or Horford against Philly.

Then again, I’m not sure the Celtics will get away with it. Enes Kanter signed on to be the fifth guy in that lineup, which could work. It may not too. And the thing is that Boston doesn’t really have another big guy. So what happens when Kanter sits? Or, even worse, if he gets hurt?
This will have to be a Brad Stevens resurgence season. He’s got the type of buy-in to do his thing, though.
Atlantic Division 2019 Odds: Toronto Raptors (7/1)
One team I’m not going to bet is Toronto. I really believe this team tops out at two or three games over .500 and I could see things going at lot worse.
Obviously Kawhi Leonard is gone. So is Danny Green. Then there is all the mileage on the role guys who played so spectacularly on the Raptors’ run to the championship.
The threat of a terrific hangover is so real, though.
Atlantic Division 2019 Odds: Brooklyn Nets (12/1)
Had Kevin Durant not been hurt in that Finals series and still gone to Brooklyn, the Nets would probably be the second team, by the odds, better than Boston is now.
Instead, the Nets are just a mild long-shot with Durant set to miss most of the season, if not all of it.
Brooklyn essentially flipped D’Angelo Russell for Kyrie Irving. It also brought in Taurean Prince, who is going to like playing for Kenny Atkinson and will fit right in, filling in for DeMarre Carroll and Jared Dudley.
I’m excited for a full season of Caris LeVert. Then there’s the chance Jarrett Allen takes another step forward and teams up with newly-acquired DeAndre Jordan as rim-protectors.
Spencer Dinwiddie had a nice season last year and seems to still be getting better with time.
2019 Atlantic Division Betting Futures Odds:
- Philadelphia 2/5
- Boston 9/2
- Toronto 7/1
- Brooklyn 12/1
- New York 500/1
Atlantic Division 2019 Prediction: take a shot with Boston.
I like a small play on the Celtics. The culture is going to take another 180 after last season’s and return to the vibes the team from two years ago had.
I’m definitely not betting Toronto and would be on board with something small on Brooklyn.
