Most notably, Mike Conley played in just 12 games, so you have to assume this team is going to step up next season, even if not in a playoff-caliber season.
Memphis Grizzlies Strengths:
It’s rare that you can find optimism in a team that barely won 20 games the year prior and didn’t add a significant player in free agency, trade or the draft, but that’s the situation the Grizzlies find themselves in entering 2018-19.

Although the grit-and-grind days are officially in the past, Mike Conley and Marc Gasol remain the driving forces behind a team that won’t give up. Conley is criminally underrated and folks often forget how many ways Gasol can impact a game.
Kyle Anderson will be a name worth keeping tabs on as well. He’s essentially replacing Tyreke Evans, and we know that players who come from the Gregg Popovich-run San Antonio Spurs system don’t always find as much success with other teams, but he has a chance to come in and provide three-and-D abilities.
This team also has some nice, young pieces who will give the roster energy when it might otherwise need to manufacture it. Dillon Brooks, Jaren Jackson Jr. and others can be energizers, which is going to be important considering this franchise is still finding its identity in a post-grit-and-grind era.
Memphis Grizzlies Weaknesses:
The Grizzlies may have ditched grit-and-grind, but offense is still major concern.

Last season, Memphis posted 101.9 points per 100 possessions. That put them in the 27th spot league wide in Offensive Efficiency, and was made worse by the fact that the team was just 28th in Effective Field-Goal Percentage and 27th in True Shooting Percentage.
Part of the reason the Grizzlies struggled so much on offense is because they had trouble controlling the ball, ceding plenty of easy buckets to opponents.
In 2017-18, Memphis was 10th in points scored off turnovers but just 21st in terms of opponent points scored per night.
Memphis Grizzlies Betting Prediction: 37-45
The Grizzlies are one of the rare teams that have a high ceiling and a low floor. Yes, health plays a big role in that, but even a healthy Memphis squad could land anywhere from seventh or eighth in the Western Conference down to 13th or 14th.
Entering the season, Memphis has been given an over/under wins projection of 34.5. This is a decent number considering how hit or miss the Grizzlies could be this season.

In the interest of health and optimism, we’re giving the Grizz a solid over. Thirty-seven wins won’t be enough to earn a postseason berth, but if Memphis can take advantage of a light schedule early in the year, it’ll at least be in the conversation as we hit the All-Star Game in February—possibly even down the stretch of the regular season.
