2018-2019 NBA Previews – Mavericks Odds
Looking for 2018 Dallas Mavericks Predictions? We’ve got your back. Dallas finished last season 24-58, finishing 13th in the NBA’s Western Conference. But the year at large was an interesting one. Outspoken owner Mark Cuban went on record the season prior stating his dislike for the concept of tanking.

Then in 2017-18, he openly admitted the team was trying to lose games by getting young players experience. At this point, you have to believe the tanking days are behind the Mavs, as there are plenty of reasons to believe the 24-win showing was more of an anomaly than a new norm in Dallas.
But it’s also important to know that making the playoffs out West is a brutal task, so there may have to be something between a postseason berth and a No. 1 overall draft pick for the Mavs to target if they want to consider this 2018-19 campaign a win when it’s all said and done.
Dallas Mavericks Strengths:
The unknown can be scary. But boy oh boy, can the unknown be exciting.

Luka Doncic was widely regarded as the best overall player in this summer’s draft, but it was also widely known that the Phoenix Suns were infatuated with Arizona’s DeAndre Ayton.
The Suns weren’t wrong to be enamored by the next unicorn in the making, but what should be surprising is that it took the Sacramento Kings drafting Marvin Bagley and then the Hawks knowing their real target, Trae Young, would be available in Dallas’ slot.
The Hawks and Mavs made a draft-day deal that landed Dallas the NBA’s most pro-ready rookie and someone who, despite the unknowns coming over from Europe, offers this team a ton of potential not just in the future, but to produce right away on a regular basis.
Another area where fans won’t quite know what to expect but will undoubtedly have a ton of optimism is with the addition to the starting lineup of DeAndre Jordan.
No, Jordan’s never going to be mistaken for a No. 1 offensive option and his defensive impact comes and goes, but he’s an incredible presence in pick-and-rolls and is, even despite his flaws, a proven shot-blocker.
Dallas Mavericks Weaknesses:
There’s going to be some confusion within the rotation this season. For starters, Doncic and Dennis Smith Jr, who is entering his sophomore season, technically play the same position.
The good news here is that Doncic can likely play the 2 or even the 3 if it turns out that’s what’s best for the team. Doncic is that versatile.
But there’s also the question of whether or not Smith will even be worthy of the starting point guard spot.
His season in 2017-18 was highlighted by some pretty spectacular dunks, but his overall game was largely disappointing.

Dirk Nowitzki’s presence is obviously a positive in the locker room, but there are a ton of unknowns with him as well. Will he be able to get up and down the court at a pace fast enough to contribute to this offense that’s getting younger?
Will his silky smooth jumper (yes, it will still be silky smooth) be enough to make up for his defensive deficiencies?
This should be a fun team to watch most nights, but we won’t really know how good they are until we see how good Smith can be and how many minutes they throw Nowitzki in what will likely be his final season.
Dallas Mavericks Betting Prediction: 37-45
The Mavs’ over/under wins-loss projection was set to 34.5. Not bad considering their 24 wins just a year ago.
The truth is, the Mavericks will probably exceed that number. The additions of Doncic and Jordan will do that alone, and assuming Smith makes improvements, that’s icing on the cake.

But again, as we stated before, making the playoffs in this conference is a serious task.
If this team were out East, we’d be taking a whole different tone. But the Mavs are, in fact, out West, and will be on the outside looking in when it comes to the 2019 postseason.
