What it means is that the Nets are finally able to “compete” for their own draft pick after years of giving those away. The irony, of course, is that the Nets have slowly been building their roster the way they want it to be when competing is actually possible.
This will be an interesting season for New York’s lesser-known franchise.
Brooklyn Nets Strengths:
When you think of a great coach, you typically think of someone who, above all else, wins wins wins no matter what. Gregg Popovich, Brad Stevens, Steve Kerr.
These names come to mind because they are constantly competing when it matters most, but Kenny Atkinson, despite his team’s terrible record year after year, deserves almost the same credit as these conference title contenders as someone who can rally the troops, work the X’s and O’s and get guys to compete both on the court and behind the scenes.

On the court, Brooklyn made one of the quietest underrated moves of the offseason bringing in big man Ed Davis for under $5 million and just a single season. Davis is a machine around the rim on defense, can rebound offensively with the best of them and despite his low scoring numbers is highly efficient when he does choose to let it fly.
(We say ‘let it fly’ loosely considering he’s highly uncomfortable shooting outside of five feet.)
Also among the bigs in Brooklyn is youngster Jarrett Allen out of Texas. Allen isn’t an All-Star at this stage in his career, but he projects to be a top-10 if not top-five center/power forward a few years down the road.
This team also has a breakout player of the year candidate in D’Angelo Russell. Russell’s career hasn’t gotten off to the start that he or his franchises (first the Los Angeles Lakers, now Brooklyn) had hoped for, but his an up-tempo scoring guard who can actually create for others when he puts his mind to it.
Look at his progression as an indicator of whether or not this team is competing for a playoff spot or lottery position down the stretch of the 2018-19 campaign.
Brooklyn Nets Weaknesses:
The Nets are not a good defensive team. Last season, the team was just 25th in defensive efficiency, giving up 108.5 points per 100 possessions.
Ed Davis’ presence off the bench and around the rim will help in this category, but he’s not going to see enough time to make a huge difference.

Offensively, the Nets were just 21st in terms of offensive efficiency, scoring 104.3 points per 100 possessions. But if there’s a bright side to the offense it’s that the team clearly knows how to push the pace, get out in transition and get easy buckets.
Last season, Brooklyn was sixth in terms of pace but 15th in True Shooting Percentage and 18th in Effective Field-Goal Percentage.
Getting quick, cheap buckets is always a good thing, but when it’s your main source of offense, that is problematic.
Brooklyn Nets Betting Prediction: 30-52
The Over/Under for this team was set at 32.5, which isn’t unreasonable. After all, Brooklyn really has started to make up for mortgaging its future when it sent away multiple first-round draft picks for Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Jason Terry.

But while a 33-win season isn’t outside the realm of possibility, you have to believe this team is ready to get back into the lottery via its own pick and will be just find giving up wins in a weak Eastern Conference.
Brooklyn will be better than it has been in recent seasons, but look to 2019-20 if you’re looking for a real turnaround.
