Kyle Busch comes into the new season as the defending Sprint Cup Champ and Joey Logano will be looking for a second-straight Daytona 500 victory as two of the big storylines for Sunday’s race.
The biggest storyline will still be which driver ends up at the right place at the right time in an event where anything can happen.
The following is a look at my top favorite, contender and longshot to win this Sunday’s race based on betting odds provided by Bovada.
NASCAR Daytona 500 Odds: The Favorite (odd of less than 10/1)
It is no big surprise that Dale Earnhardt Jr. has been opened as a +600 favorite to win this race given his past success at this track.
This year’s Daytona 500 could have a special place in his heart given that it will mark the 15th anniversary of his dad’s death in this very race.
Not that the No. 88 car needs any added motivation given the team’s victory in the 2014 Daytona 500.
Dale Jr. also won here in the second point race of the season in 2015 and if you go back over his last six runs at this track in a Spring Cup point race he adds some tremendous value to his odd with four finishes of third or better.
NASCAR Daytona 500 Odds: The Contender (odds from 10/1 to 19/1)
Winning can be contagious at Daytona and that is why I zeroed-in on Denny Hamlin at +1200 as my top-valued contender to win on Sunday.

The No. 11 car got the 2016 Speed Week at Daytona off to a fast start with a wild victory in last Saturday night’s Sprint Unlimited.
Hamlin is another driver that brings some solid form at Daytona into this race.
He has never won a point-race at this track, but he continues to come mighty close with a sixth-place finish or better in his last four runs around the Daytona oval.
NASCAR Daytona 500 Odds: The Longshot (odds 20/1 or greater)
Picking longshots to win NASCAR’s biggest race have paid off in the past with Trevor Bayne’s victory in 2011 which followed an unlikely win by Jamie McMurray the year before.
In 2008, Ryan Newman shocked the field with his victory in the Great American Race.
Bayne’s odds to win this year are set at +6000 and Newman is a +5000 longshot and while I would not go with either of these past champions, I would make a small play on McMurray’s +2800 betting odds that lightning does strike twice at Daytona late this Sunday afternoon.

Like I mentioned earlier, sometime being in the right place at the right time is all it take to win a very wide-open race.
