The Nationals and Padres will be wrapping up their series on Sunday afternoon from Petco Park.
Patrick Corbin will be facing off with Sean Manaea in this ball game.
San Diego is a very big favorite at home here with the total sitting at 8.5.
Washington Nationals
The Nationals were able to take the first two games of this series, but the offense went quiet for them on Saturday as they fell to the Padres 2-1.
In their last game, they had opportunities to win and actually had a lead early on in the game, but they were not able to put it all together in the end.
Washington was able to out-hit San Diego on Saturday, but that really did not matter in the end because it did not end up translating to a lot of runs.
They knew they were going to be facing a tough customer in Joe Musgrove and they simply did not hit him or their bullpen all that well.
One positive from the loss was the strong outing by Josiah Gray who was able to really do a good job against a very powerful and talented offense.
The right-hander ended up tossing five innings and allowed just one earned run. His command was not the best, but I still mostly liked what I saw from him.
It is going to be very hard for them to get similar results on the mound when Patrick Corbin takes the mound on Sunday who has just been a disaster.
There was a time when he was a good pitcher in this league, but the fact that he is still making starts for them speaks volumes about this organization. For a while now, he has been one of the most untrustworthy arms in the sport.
San Diego Padres
No matter how it happened, the Padres had to figure out a way to get a victory over the Nats after they dropped the first two against one of the worst teams in the sport.
The win on Saturday was not anything flashy and there was not a ton that stood out, but that really is not all that important. The bottom line is they could not afford to drop another game in that series.
Joe Musgrove, who has been very impressive for them this season, delivered more of the same as he went six innings and punched out seven batters while scattering just four hits.
There have been certain players on San Diego that have not stepped up this season, but that has not been the case with him. He has been very reliable on the mound and more times than not, he has given his team a chance to get the win.
Even though it was not a game that featured a ton of offense, the Friars showed how they can really do damage with the home run ball.
Both Josh Bell and Juan Soto were able to hit bombs against their former ball club. Given some of the hitters that are in this lineup, there is a good chance they will continue to win games in this fashion.
Going for the split is certainly not what the Padres want to do here, but it is what they have to do. If they dropped another one to them, it would be hard to have much confidence in them going forward.
Sean Manaea will get the ball in the finale and he really is going to have to put forth a strong outing here. He just has not been all that great this season and a lot of his numbers would support that.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Nationals are 18-43 in their last 61 overall.
- The Nationals are 4-11 in their last 15 during game 4 of a series.
- The Padres are 10-4 in their last 14 during game 4 of a series.
- The total has gone over in 5 of San Diego’s last 7 home games vs. the Nationals
Washington Nationals vs. San Diego Padres MLB Prediction:
The offense has been pretty lacking for the Padres so far in this series, but I do not see that happening again in this one.
With Corbin on the hill, I see it as a good opportunity for San Diego to really get the bats going and do some damage.
I know it has not been the best season for him so far, but I look for Manaea to be solid in this one and leave the bullpen in good shape.
Give me the Padres laying the runs at home.
