The Chicago White Sox have a chance to close out the Houston Astros on Wednesday afternoon in Game 2 of their AL Wild Card Series. First pitch from Daikin Park is scheduled for 5:00 PM ET on Peacock and NBCSN.
Chicago grabbed a 1-0 series lead Tuesday with a 6-3 victory. The White Sox scored three times in the first two innings, built a 5-0 advantage and survived Houston’s late push to move within one victory of the ALDS.
Chicago landed first, and now Houston gets Brown with its entire season riding on nine innings.
Hagen Smith opened Game 1 with three scoreless innings for Chicago before Will Venable turned things over to his bullpen. Colson Montgomery homered, Sam Antonacci drove in two runs and Grant Taylor recorded the final seven outs.
The White Sox finished the regular season 84-78 and claimed the AL’s final Wild Card spot. Houston went 81-81 but won the AL West, earning home field throughout this best-of-three series.

Houston is around a -150 favorite for Game 2, with Chicago sitting near +123 on the moneyline. The Astros are laying 1.5 runs at plus money, while the total is 7.5.
Chicago has won four of its last five, including Tuesday’s playoff opener. The White Sox finished the regular season with a 4-2 victory over Colorado before carrying that momentum into Houston.
The Astros won the regular-season series 5-2, taking two of three in Chicago and three of four at Daikin Park. Hunter Brown was particularly effective in those meetings, going 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA in two starts.
Tuesday didn’t follow that regular-season script.
Chicago jumped on Houston’s bullpen plan immediately, scoring three runs in the first two innings. Montgomery added a 432-foot homer in the fourth, and the White Sox bullpen protected the lead after Houston finally started pushing back.

Astros Stats
Houston’s lineup finished the regular season with plenty of power, led by another monster year from Yordan Alvarez. He won the AL batting title at .316 while setting a career high with 42 home runs and driving in 106.
Christian Walker added 29 homers, Isaac Paredes hit 25 and Jeremy Peña finished with 22. That’s enough pop to make any lead uncomfortable, which Chicago discovered once Houston finally started making noise Tuesday.
The Astros scored 734 runs during the regular season, but their pitching staff allowed 766. Houston survived that negative run differential to win the AL West at 81-81.
Home field wasn’t much of an advantage either.
The Astros went 39-42 at Daikin Park during the regular season, and Game 1 added another home loss. Now Houston needs Brown to provide some length after eight pitchers were required to get through Tuesday’s opener.
White Sox Stats
Chicago’s offense finished with 211 home runs, giving Venable plenty of power throughout the order. Munetaka Murakami and Miguel Vargas shared the team lead with 33 apiece, while Montgomery added 31.
That depth showed up in Game 1.
Montgomery supplied the biggest swing with his fourth-inning homer, while Antonacci drove in two and several White Sox hitters contributed to an 11-hit attack.
Chicago finished 84-78 despite going only 36-45 away from home. The White Sox earned their postseason spot with one of baseball’s biggest year-to-year turnarounds after losing more than 100 games in each of the previous two seasons.
The bullpen deserves credit for finishing Tuesday’s win, but there is a price attached. Taylor threw a career-high 54 pitches while recording the final seven outs, making his availability for Game 2 doubtful.
That puts more importance on Burke giving Chicago useful innings. Another early trip to the bullpen would make this considerably more uncomfortable than Game 1.
White Sox vs. Astros Pitching Matchup
Sean Burke gets the ball for Chicago after going 11-7 with a 3.34 ERA during the regular season. He struck out 185 hitters and became one of the most dependable options in the White Sox rotation.
Burke now gets an elimination-game atmosphere without Chicago actually facing elimination. His job is to keep the White Sox attached long enough to put pressure on Houston as the innings disappear.
Hunter Brown has the heavier burden. He finished 6-4 with a 3.19 ERA, 124 K’s and a 1.27 WHIP across 107 1/3 innings.

The challenge for Burke is obvious: don’t let Alvarez and Houston’s power bats create an early hole. Chicago can afford patience because it already owns the series lead, while every scoreless inning increases the pressure on the Astros.
Brown is capable of taking over this game, but Chicago doesn’t need to beat him three times. The White Sox need to survive Wednesday once.

Hunter Brown is the reason Houston is favored, and he’s earned that respect after dominating Chicago twice during the regular season. But laying the price with an 81-win team that finished below .500 at home isn’t especially tempting.
Sean Burke gives Chicago a legitimate chance to stay close enough for the bats to matter. The White Sox also made Houston’s pitching depth work hard Tuesday, which takes away some of the usual comfort that comes with backing the favorite behind its ace.
Brown is the best pitcher in this matchup, but +123 is enough for me to bet the better team price.
Chicago’s bullpen isn’t completely fresh either, especially after Grant Taylor’s 54-pitch save, so I’m not pretending the White Sox have every advantage. What they do have is a lineup with power throughout it and zero pressure to chase Brown if he starts dealing.
Houston may force a Game 3, but at this number I’ll make them prove it. Give me White Sox ML +123.
