Red Sox vs. Yankees Gameday
The New York Yankees can close out the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night after taking a 1-0 lead in their best-of-three AL Wild Card Series. First pitch from Yankee Stadium is scheduled for 8:00 PM ET.
New York couldn’t have asked for a better opener. Cam Schlittler shut Boston down for 6 1/3 innings, and Ben Rice supplied the fireworks with two home runs and six RBI in a 9-0 Yankees victory.
Boston’s season is on the line, and scoring zero runs again would be a rather inconvenient strategy.
The Red Sox finished the regular season 87-75 under Chad Tracy, who had the interim tag removed late in September after guiding Boston into the postseason. The Sox were particularly comfortable away from Fenway, finishing 46-35 on the road.
Aaron Boone’s Yankees went 93-68 and earned home field for this series. New York finished 46-34 at Yankee Stadium before opening October with Tuesday night’s blowout.

New York is around a -140 favorite for Game 2, with Boston approximately +115 to +120 depending on the sportsbook. The Yankees are laying 1.5 runs at plus money, while the current total has dropped to 6.5.
Tuesday belonged to Schlittler and Rice. Schlittler allowed only two hits and one walk while striking out 10 over 6 1/3 scoreless innings, giving Boston almost nothing to work with.
Rice took care of the rest.
The Yankees DH went 4-for-5 with two homers and six RBI, including a grand slam that turned the opener into a rout. New York finished with 12 hits while Boston was shut out on three.
Now the pressure shifts entirely to the Red Sox. One more loss ends their season, while New York can advance without needing a deciding Game 3.

Yankees Stats
New York’s offense produced 739 runs during the regular season, and Rice was the biggest power source. He finished with 41 home runs, 97 RBI and a .534 slugging percentage before immediately carrying that production into October.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. added 19 homers and 41 stolen bases during the regular season, giving Boone another way to create trouble. Cody Bellinger contributed 17 homers, while Paul Goldschmidt hit 18.
The obvious absence is Aaron Judge.
Judge was left off the Yankees’ Wild Card roster while recovering from a strained right calf. That removes a massive bat from the middle of the order, even if Tuesday night’s nine-run performance made his absence pretty easy to forget for a few hours.
New York can also lean on its pitching. The Yankees allowed 601 runs during the regular season, and Schlittler has already handed the bullpen a relatively comfortable workload entering Game 2.
Red Sox Stats
Boston finished the regular season with 689 runs scored, but there wasn’t much evidence of that offense Tuesday.
The Red Sox managed only three hits and never seriously threatened Schlittler.
Willson Contreras supplied the most power during the season, batting .275 with 27 homers and 81 RBI. Wilyer Abreu added 24 home runs, while Jarren Duran hit 20.
Boston’s lineup isn’t built entirely around the long ball. Ceddanne Rafaela hit .283 with 32 doubles, while Caleb Durbin scored 74 runs and stole 20 bases.
The Red Sox now need that lineup to wake up quickly.
Boston’s pitching helped carry the club into October, and Gray gives Tracy an experienced starter for an elimination game. That becomes even more important after the offense gave the pitching staff absolutely no margin for error Tuesday.
Red Sox vs. Yankees Pitching Matchup
Sonny Gray gets the ball for Boston after an excellent regular season. He went 18-5 with a 2.72 ERA, 149 strikeouts and a 1.15 WHIP across 169 innings.
Gray was especially effective against New York. He went 1-0 with a 1.98 ERA in two starts against the Yankees, striking out 12 over 13 2/3 innings as Boston won both games.
Max Fried counters for New York. The left-hander finished 5-5 with a 2.80 ERA, 104 strikeouts and a 0.99 WHIP across 112 2/3 innings.

Fried also had success in this matchup during the regular season, posting a 1.93 ERA against Boston. That’s a pretty appealing arm to have available when one victory sends you to the Division Series.
Both starters have already demonstrated that they can handle the lineup they’ll see Wednesday. Gray now has to give Boston a chance to extend its season, while Fried can attack without New York needing another nine-run performance behind him.

Boston is staring at elimination after getting blanked in Game 1, but I don’t expect the answer to be suddenly winning a slugfest. Sonny Gray gives the Red Sox exactly the kind of veteran arm they need here, and he handled this Yankees lineup well during the regular season.
Max Fried gives New York the same luxury. He’s been tough on Boston, and the Yankees don’t need to chase offense with a series lead and a quality left-hander on the mound.
After Tuesday’s blowout, I’m expecting Game 2 to look much more like an October pitching fight.
The absence of Aaron Judge from New York’s Wild Card roster also matters when we’re playing a total. Ben Rice can obviously do damage, but asking this Yankees lineup to duplicate Tuesday’s nine-run eruption against Gray is another story.
At 7.5, I’ve got enough cushion to survive a few mistakes from either starter. Give me Under 7.5.
