The Nationals will be on the road to take on the Phillies for the second game of their series on Friday.
Josiah Gray and Kyle Gibson are the slated starters in this one.
Philadelphia is a large favorite at home in this game. I have not seen much movement from the total of 8.5.
Washington Nationals
In a game that got shortened by rain, the Nationals started off this series with a 5-4 loss on the road.
Although the game did not go the full distance, I think some people were surprised the Nats were close at all in this game. They all count the same, but there is no question they were in this game and had their chances.
Paolo Espino went four innings while allowing seven hits and five earned runs on the night. Given the type of lineup he had to face, those kinds of numbers do not come as a big surprise.
Washington did have some tough at-bats and they took the lead in the first inning when Luke Voit had an RBI single. With Josh Bell now with the Padres, it will be interesting to see how he does with the Nationals.
Overall, this group was able to take some good swings and put together tough at-bats against Syndergaard, but it was not enough in the end.
When you look at much the bullpen for the Phillies has struggled this season, Washington would have certainly liked to take their chances against that unit and see what they could do.
Another frustrating thing for the Nationals in the opener was they were able to record 11 hits but still did not have that offensive frenzy. When a team has that many knocks, the hope for them is they score more runs than they did.
Josiah Gray will be getting the ball in the middle game and he has seen mixed results in 2022. Compared to some of the disasters that are on this pitching staff, he has not been awful, though.
Philadelphia Phillies
A day after winning a close one against one of the best teams in the NL, the Phillies won a close one against the worst team in baseball.
The game was far from a lock, but they did what they had to in order to take care of business against a team that is just not anywhere close to them at the moment.
Noah Syndergaard made his debut for the Phillies and he did get hit often, but he was able to limit the damage and earn the win in what was a weird game.
He ended up going five innings and allowing 11 hits and four earned runs while striking out just two. He did not have his best stuff out there, but he figured out a way to get the job done in the end.
The big inning for the Phils came in the third inning when they scored four of their runs. They hit Espino well for the whole game, but that was the inning they were really able to get to him and do the damage.
Rhys Hoskins belted a home run in the first inning and that was just the start for them. Alec Bohm was able to hit the three-run bomb in the fourth which proved to be enough.
After doing what they had to do in the opener, the Phillies will have to keep that up on Friday and for the remainder of this series. These are the types of games that they really need to take advantage of.
Kyle Gibson is on the mound in this one and he will look to keep up what he did in his last start against the Braves where he looked quite good. Against this lineup, he really should be able to be effective.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Nationals are 8-20 in their last 28 road games vs. a team with a winning record.
- The Nationals are 8-24 in their last 32 Friday games.
- The Phillies are 7-1 in their last 8 overall.
- The Phillies are 5-1 in their last 6 games following a win.
Washington Nationals vs. Philadelphia Phillies MLB Prediction:
The Nationals were able to hang tough in the first game, but I am not sold on that happening again on Friday.
Philadelphia is just a lot better in so many different areas and I expect them to show that in this one.
I trust Gibson more in a spot like this and I feel he can be solid while Gray and that bullpen are going to have a big challenge ahead of them in keeping that lineup in check.
Phillies on the Runline is the play for me.
