Washington Nationals
Washington is not playing good ball right now. They have lost 7 of 10 as their pitching has been terrible this season – at least compared to expectations. The lineup sans Bryce has been alright though. Victor Robles and Juan Soto are playing like young players do, striking out a lot but they are also hitting. They are not going to be sent down anytime soon. Maybe Brian Dozier should be though, he is hitting under .200.

Max Scherzer leads the NL in Ks and barely walks anyone but his batting average against this season is .260. That is alarmingly high for someone with his pedigree but it is too early to know if that is going to regress to his career norms or is something up. What we do know is that the team is just 1-6 in his starts and his ERA is higher than ever. Throw in a bad Washington bullpen and the Nats are in trouble.
Milwaukee Brewers
Milwaukee swept the Mets over the weekend and is once again in the thick of it in the NL Central. Christian Yelich went yard against yesterday as he continues his pursuit of a second MVP. The lineup has been only middle of the pack in terms of scoring and there is room for improvement there. Whether that will come against an arm like Scherzer is hard to call though.

Chacin has nowhere near the track record of Scherzer but he is also pitching a lot worse than career norms. However, he is coming off his best start and is night and day in terms of home/road splits so backing him at home, even in this spot is not crazy. Milwaukee’s pen is in the middle of the pack but Josh Hader might be the best reliever in baseball. He pitched yesterday, getting the save on 13 pitches.
