Washington Nationals
Stephen Strasburg was cruising on Tuesday until the seventh inning. He had two outs before giving up a three-run double to Lorenzo Cain, who had just returned to the lineup after getting hit by a pitch on the hand over the weekend.
Strasburg left before getting the third out and he final line read: six hits, four runs, two walks, and eleven strikeouts. He was tied with Patrick Corbin for the team lead with 1.6 Wins Above Replacement and has gone ahead to take the lead by himself after Tuesday.

In fact, Washington’s top three players, by WAR, are Strasburg, Corbin, and fellow ace Max Scherzer. All three guys have pitched well this season, though Scherzer’s numbers are quite as dominant as we’ve gotten used to over the years.
In an NL East that doesn’t boast world-beaters, the Nationals have a chance to make the sort of unseen run that could pay off handsomely. They are on nobody’s radar, have three aces, and just have to get the offense healthy to have a chance.
Anthony Rendon returned on Tuesday and went 0-for-3. Trea Turner and Ryan Zimmerman will be next. Both are expected to come back sometime in the next week.
I’m not saying it will happen but I could see the National getting hot at some point this season, if the offense ever clicks and the three aces continue to stay healthy.
Los Angeles Dodgers
The Dodgers have the best record in baseball, a far cry from the way they started last season. They won again on Tuesday behind Hyun-Jin Ryu, who continues to just pitch tremendously after the health problems that led some to believe he may never be a productive starting pitcher in the big leagues again.
Ryu went the full nine, gave up four hits, and struck out six without walking a batter. It was his first complete game since he tossed two (one shutout) as a rookie in 2013. He finished fourth in the NL’s Rookie of the Year voting that season, behind the late Jose Fernandez, his teammate Yasiel Puig, and Shelby Miller. At this point, Ryu is the most valuable of the bunch.

Los Angeles got tough news with center fielder AJ Pollock last week when it was discovered he would need surgery to remove some screws in his elbow from a procedure he had previously. He’ll miss a couple of months but if there’s one team that can afford to lose its newly-minted outfielder, it’s the Dodgers.
LA will plug in Chris Taylor, or Alex Verdugo, or David Freese, and they won’t miss much. The postseason is when they really want Pollock in the lineup and healthy. If he’s there, he’ll make a difference with his combination of speed and power.
