The Nationals and Braves split a double-header on Friday with Washington taking the wild nightcap 10-9. Oddsmakers aren’t giving Washington much of a chance to make it two in a row however.
Washington has essentially called it a season being 11 games under .500 but the Braves need a win Saturday to keep ahead of the Phillies, who are just two games back in the East.
Washington Nationals
Washington’s 10-9 win on Friday night came as a surprise considering it ended a seven game losing streak and they were +170 underdogs.
The 9 runs allowed, even in the win, is indicative of how the Nationals’ season has gone. Despite having Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg (sometimes) in the rotation, the team ranks 26th in ERA and 29th in WHIP.
Erick Fedde will try to relieve some of those pitching woes on Saturday night. The right-hander is 1-3 with a 4.71 ERA on the year and has shuffled time between starting and being in the bullpen this year.
Atlanta Braves
Atlanta hoped for a sweep and not a split on Friday as they won the day game 7-1. The night loss snapped a five game winning streak for the Braves.
Even in defeat though, Atlanta’s offense was excellent yet again. In the last six games the Braves have plated 51 runs led largely by Marcell Ozuna who is 12 for his last 29 with 4 HR and 3 doubles.
Atlanta might not need a whole lot of offense Saturday night with Max Fried on the hill. Washington does fare better vs. LH pitchers than RH lately, but Fried is shooting for a Cy Young Award with a 6-0 record and 1.60 ERA.
