The Chicago White Sox and Houston Astros open their best-of-three AL Wild Card Series Tuesday afternoon at Daikin Park. Chicago finished 84-78 to grab the final AL Wild Card, while Houston went 81-81 and won the AL West.
First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 PM ET on NBCSN and Peacock.
Chicago finished one game behind Cleveland in the AL Central and closed the regular season by winning seven of its final 10. Houston needed the final weekend to finish off Texas, clinching the division with a 9-0 win over the Athletics on Sunday.
Houston took the scenic route to October, but nobody asks for style points once the Wild Card round starts.

The Astros won five of seven against Chicago during the regular season, including two of three at Rate Field in July. The White Sox showed they can punch back, though, hanging a 12-3 win on Houston in the finale of that series.

Houston is a small favorite in Game 1, sitting around -125 on the moneyline with Chicago approximately +108. The Astros are -1.5 at roughly +155 on the runline, while the White Sox are +1.5 around -188.

Those relatively tight numbers make sense for a matchup between an 84-win Wild Card team and an 81-win division champion. Chicago actually finished three games better in the standings and went 36-45 away from home, while Houston was only 39-42 at Daikin Park.
Both clubs are also taking an unusual route on the mound. Hagen Smith opens for Chicago and AJ Blubaugh gets the ball for Houston, with each team preparing to lean heavily on its bullpen rather than asking either rookie to work like a traditional postseason starter.

Astros Stats
Houston’s record wasn’t pretty, but the lineup still carries serious power into October. The Astros finished among baseball’s leaders in home runs, and everything starts with Alvarez in the middle of the order.
Alvarez won the AL batting title at .316 while launching 42 homers and driving in 106 runs. He also led the majors with a .432 on-base percentage and .601 slugging percentage, which is a fairly efficient way to make an 81-win offense considerably more dangerous.
Isaac Paredes finished with 25 homers and 94 RBI, while Christian Walker added 29 home runs and 87 RBI. Houston doesn’t need Alvarez to supply every bit of damage, even if he’s clearly the hitter Chicago would prefer not to see with runners aboard.
The pitching staff was far less convincing during the regular season. Houston’s rotation finished near the bottom of MLB in ERA, which helps explain why Joe Espada is taking the bullpen route in Game 1.
White Sox Stats
Chicago’s return to October was powered by an offense with plenty of pop of its own. The White Sox finished fifth in MLB in home runs and scored 776 runs, 42 more than Houston during the regular season.
Miguel Vargas finished with 33 homers and 22 stolen bases, while Munetaka Murakami also reached 30-plus home runs in his first MLB season. Chase Meidroth supplied a different look, batting .276 with 16 homers, 90 runs and strong defense at second base.
Chicago didn’t stumble into October; 84 wins and a +56 run differential make that pretty clear.
The White Sox also arrive playing well. They went 7-3 over their final 10 games and closed the regular season with a 4-2 victory over Colorado.
There are holes, particularly with a pitching staff that spent much of the season around the middle of the league. Still, Chicago’s offensive depth gives Will Venable enough ways to make Houston work through every inning.
White Sox vs. Astros Pitching Matchup
Calling this a traditional starting-pitching matchup would be stretching things. Smith opens for Chicago after making 18 MLB appearances but only one start during the regular season, while Blubaugh worked primarily as a multi-inning reliever for Houston.
Smith was excellent in that role, going 3-3 with a 1.29 ERA and 0.96 WHIP. He struck out 41 and allowed very little hard damage, giving Chicago an intriguing left-handed weapon to start piecing together Game 1.
Blubaugh went 5-3 with a 3.66 ERA and logged 96 relief innings, the most in the majors. Houston would love multiple innings from him before turning the game over to the rest of the bullpen.

That’s where the matchup gets interesting. Hader and Abreu are rested for Houston, giving Espada two established late-inning arms if Blubaugh and the middle relief can build the bridge.
Chicago has quality bullpen options of its own, and Smith’s numbers make him more than a ceremonial opener. Neither club is planning to hand the baseball to one guy and disappear for six innings.
Game 1 should be managed aggressively from the first sign of trouble.
That puts extra pressure on each offense to cash in early opportunities, with Alvarez representing Houston’s biggest threat and Chicago bringing the deeper regular-season scoring profile.
Chicago White Sox vs. Houston Astros bottom line: Game 1 becomes a battle of bullpen deployment almost immediately, with Chicago bringing the better regular-season record and Houston countering with Alvarez, rested late-inning arms and home field in a matchup that could turn on one early scoring chance.

Here is my White Sox Astros free pick: I’m taking Astros ML -124. Game 1 is essentially a bullpen game on both sides, which changes the equation from simply comparing Hagen Smith’s 1.29 ERA with AJ Blubaugh’s 3.66.
Houston has Yordan Alvarez sitting in the middle of the order after a monster .316 season with 42 homers and 106 RBI. More importantly for Tuesday, Josh Hader and Bryan Abreu are rested behind Blubaugh, giving the Astros two proven late-inning options if they can get there with a lead.
Houston may be the strangest division champ in the bracket, but Alvarez and a rested back end travel just fine into October.
Chicago is dangerous enough to make this uncomfortable. The White Sox won 84 games, hit plenty of home runs and went 7-3 down the stretch, so I’m not treating them like some happy-to-be-here Wild Card.
I simply prefer Houston’s path through nine innings in a game where both managers will be mixing and matching early. At this price, I’ll back the Astros to get Game 1 at home.
