The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees renew the rivalry Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium in Game 1 of their best-of-three AL Wild Card Series. Boston finished 87-75, while New York went 93-68 to earn home-field advantage for the entire series.
First pitch is scheduled for 8:00 PM ET on NBC and Peacock.
The Yankees won the season series 7-6, including four of six meetings in the Bronx. Boston certainly wasn’t overmatched, though, and now the margin for error gets considerably smaller with only three games available to decide who moves on.
Red Sox-Yankees in October rarely needs extra seasoning, and a best-of-three gives every mistake a little more weight.

Boston finished the regular season Sunday with a 6-2 loss to the Cubs in a game moved to Tropicana Field because of the nor’easter. New York’s finale against Baltimore was canceled, leaving the Yankees at 93-68 after splitting Friday’s doubleheader with the Orioles.

New York is a modest favorite for Game 1, with the Yankees sitting around -140 and Boston approximately +120 on the moneyline. The runline has New York -1.5 at a plus price, while the total is 7.5.
That number puts the starting pitchers squarely in the spotlight.
Schlittler finished the regular season with a 1.95 ERA and 239 strikeouts, while Tolle went 9-6 with a 3.03 ERA and 171 punchouts. Tolle has also been terrific against New York, allowing only one earned run with 18 strikeouts over 13 innings against the Yankees this season.
New York won 12 of its final 18 games and closed the regular season by taking the second game of Friday’s doubleheader against Baltimore 6-3. Boston finished with Sunday’s loss to Chicago after winning the first two games of that relocated series.

New York finished with 223 home runs, giving this lineup plenty of ways to change a game with one swing. Ben Rice led the Yankees with 41 homers and 97 RBI while posting a .534 slugging percentage.
The pitching staff was even better.
New York finished with a 3.20 team ERA while holding opponents to a .223 batting average. Schlittler was the headliner, but this isn’t a staff that suddenly becomes comfortable to face once the starter leaves.
Aaron Judge is the major Game 1 question. He took batting practice Monday as he works back from a right calf injury, but his availability for the Wild Card opener had not yet been confirmed.
That’s a rather important name to have sitting in the maybe column.
Red Sox Stats
Boston finished with a .246 team batting average and 162 home runs, so the Red Sox don’t bring New York’s raw power into this matchup. They did finish with 285 doubles, giving the lineup another way to create scoring opportunities without waiting around for the long ball.
Ceddanne Rafaela led Boston with a .282 average, while Willson Contreras supplied a team-high 27 home runs and 81 RBI. Adley Rutschman also homered in Sunday’s regular-season finale.
Boston doesn’t need to win a home-run derby if Tolle keeps turning Yankee at-bats into uncomfortable little adventures.
The larger strength is on the mound. Boston finished with a 3.54 team ERA, and the bullpen gives Chad Tracy legitimate options if Tolle can hand over a close game.
Contreras is another player worth watching after dealing with a hand issue late in the regular season. His postseason availability would give Boston an important right-handed bat against a Yankees staff that doesn’t offer many easy innings.

Boston hands Game 1 to Tolle after the rookie finished 9-6 with a 3.03 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 171 strikeouts. Those are strong numbers anywhere, but his work against the Yankees makes this assignment particularly interesting.
Tolle faced New York for 13 innings this season and allowed one earned run while striking out 18. Yankee Stadium isn’t exactly known for calming postseason nerves, but at least he isn’t walking into an unfamiliar lineup.
New York answers with Schlittler, who went 14-6 with a 1.95 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 239 strikeouts. He has been one of the American League’s toughest starters to square up all season.

Schlittler also knows this rivalry in October. He threw eight scoreless innings with 12 strikeouts against Boston in last year’s Wild Card Series, and he’s backed that performance up with an even better full season.
There isn’t much mystery about what either club wants from Game 1.
Tolle needs to keep New York’s power bats from turning Yankee Stadium into a launching pad, while Schlittler can attack a Boston lineup that finished well behind the Yankees in home-run production. If both starters bring anything close to their regular-season form, early runs should require some work.

Here is my Red Sox Yankees free pick: I’m taking Under 7.5. Payton Tolle and Cam Schlittler aren’t easing into October with friendly assignments, but both have already shown they can handle these lineups.
Tolle has been especially nasty against New York, allowing one earned run across 13 innings with 18 strikeouts. Schlittler counters with a 1.95 ERA and has given Boston problems throughout the season.
Game 1 nerves are one thing, but these two starters have enough swing-and-miss stuff to settle things down quickly.
Boston also brings one of the better pitching staffs in baseball behind Tolle, which matters if this turns into a bullpen game by the sixth or seventh. New York owns the more dangerous power profile, but Tolle’s previous success against these hitters isn’t something I’m eager to ignore.
I expect both starters to make scoring opportunities expensive, and neither side should be interested in giving away outs in the opener of a best-of-three.
