Cubs vs. Padres Gameday
The Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres open their best-of-three NL Wild Card Series Tuesday night at Petco Park. Chicago finished 89-73, while San Diego went 91-71 to earn home-field advantage for the series.
First pitch is scheduled for 10:00 PM ET on NBCSN and Peacock.
This is also a postseason rematch. Chicago eliminated San Diego in three games during last year’s Wild Card round, with only one run separating the clubs across the entire series.
One run separated these clubs last October, so nobody should expect much breathing room in the rematch.

The Cubs owned the regular-season matchup, winning five of six and taking two of three at Petco Park. They outscored San Diego 55-28, although Chicago’s 23-3 demolition on July 1 did quite a bit of work on that margin.

San Diego is a modest Game 1 favorite, sitting around -125 with Chicago approximately +108 on the moneyline. The Padres are -1.5 at a plus price, while the total is 7.
That’s a pretty skinny number for two offenses with this much pop.
San Diego finished 51-30 at Petco Park and earned the right to keep the entire Wild Card Series at home. Chicago went 42-39 away from Wrigley, including those two April wins in San Diego.
The Cubs closed the regular season by taking two of three from Boston. San Diego finished with a 9-4 win over Arizona and enters October with its offense playing considerably better than it did during the first half.

Padres Stats
San Diego’s offense picked an excellent time to wake up. Since the start of September, the Padres have been among baseball’s best offensive clubs, a major turnaround from a lineup that spent much of the first half searching for answers.
Fernando Tatis Jr. has been right in the middle of it.
Tatis hit 20 home runs after the All-Star break and finished with 25. Manny Machado reached 30 homers, while Jackson Merrill also heated up down the stretch to give San Diego considerably more punch around its stars.
Ty France adds another tough at-bat in the middle of the order. Xander Bogaerts gives the Padres another experienced postseason bat near the top.
The bullpen might be San Diego’s biggest weapon.
Mason Miller owns the ninth, Adrian Morejon can handle the setup work, and Jason Adam is back from his shoulder injury. If King hands over a lead, Craig Stammen has several ways to make the final innings uncomfortable.
Cubs Stats
Chicago’s lineup is deeper than the original season numbers suggest, starting with one of baseball’s biggest breakout stars. Crow-Armstrong became just the seventh player in MLB history to reach 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in the same season.
He finished with 45 homers and 41 steals.
Giving Crow-Armstrong a free base is dangerous because he has several different ideas about how to make you regret it.
Bregman is back after suffering multiple fractures in his left cheek area when he was hit by a foul ball while waiting on deck. He returned as the DH Friday and homered in each of his first two at-bats Sunday, giving Chicago an important veteran bat for October.
Then there are Suzuki, Busch, Happ and Hoerner.
The Cubs can pressure a pitching staff in several different ways, and they already showed San Diego plenty of that during the regular season. Chicago also finished as baseball’s best defensive club by a wide margin, setting Statcast-era records in both Fielding Run Value and Outs Above Average.
Cubs vs. Padres Pitching Matchup
Matthew Boyd gets Game 1 for Chicago after finishing 10-5 with a 3.91 ERA. He wasn’t the Cubs’ most dominant starter down the stretch, but Craig Counsell trusts the veteran lefty to open the series.
Boyd’s job gets tougher because San Diego is swinging it considerably better now than it was earlier in the season.
Michael King gets the ball for the Padres at 12-10 with a 3.21 ERA. He established himself as San Diego’s ace during a season when the rest of the rotation dealt with injuries and plenty of moving pieces.
King also finished with 159 strikeouts and a 1.18 WHIP.

Chicago’s familiarity with Petco and its success against San Diego this season should keep King from feeling too comfortable.
The Padres have their own reason for confidence. Tatis, Machado and Merrill are all swinging it better, and Boyd now gets the September version of this lineup rather than the one that sputtered through much of the first half.
Then the bullpens take over.
San Diego owns the cleaner late-inning setup with Miller, Morejon and Adam, while Chicago is more likely to mix and match. That makes early scoring especially valuable before the Padres can start shortening the game.
Chicago Cubs vs. San Diego Padres bottom line: Chicago dominated the regular-season series, but San Diego enters the rematch with a much hotter lineup and King on the mound, giving Game 1 a very different feel from those six earlier meetings.

Here is my Cubs Padres free pick: I’m taking Over 7. Michael King deserves the ace label for San Diego, but Chicago saw enough Padres pitching this season to score 55 runs in six meetings.
The Cubs also bring more thunder than the source numbers suggest. Pete Crow-Armstrong finished a 40-40 season, and Chicago has Bregman, Suzuki and Busch stacked behind him.
Seven isn’t asking for a track meet, and one crooked inning could do plenty of the heavy lifting.
The Friar’s offense is coming in fairly hot too. The Padres finished September with one of baseball’s best attacks, with Tatis finding his power again and Machado reaching 30 homers.
Boyd can keep Chicago competitive, but his 3.91 ERA leaves San Diego a reasonable path to its share. At 7, the push protection matters in a matchup with enough dangerous bats on both sides.
