The Jays are definitely a surprise to be participating in the playoffs this season and were helped by the new format of course.
Tampa is definitely not a surprise though I think most pundits had them pegged for a second-place finish in the division. they are going to be tough to beat.
Toronto Blue Jays
This season has been a success for Toronto, now let’ see if they can add to that. This is a team with a high ceiling but a low floor too because their lineup is so unproven.
During the regular season Teoscar Fernandez exploded. Even though he missed some time he was among league leaders in homers and RBIs. Veteran Randall Grichuk also had a very good season but this duo needs the kids to show up.
I am not sure why it is not official but this should be Hyun-Jin Ryu’s game to start. The free-agent has been very good for Toronto this season and coming from the Dodgers he has a lot of playoff experience. 1-0 in the playoffs last season.
*NOTE* It has now been announced that Matt Shoemaker will get the start. Via MLB.com he’s the surprise Game 1 starter.
Shoemaker was held out of his last regular-season start to keep him fresh for this moment. He won’t go deep into the game, but the Blue Jays will have a bullpen plan in place to pick up where he leaves off.
Tampa Bay Rays
The Rays are good and their pitching can be excellent but when you look at them on paper they are not scary like other elite teams.
The lineup is all about capitalizing on opportunities. They are not an elite hitting or home run team but they finished 12th in the Majors in scoring. Brandon Lowe does not look like much at the plate but he leads the team with 14 homers.
Blake Snell is getting the game one start off a good, but not great season. He pitched in last year’s playoffs and had some success.
Snell tends to use too many pitches but is backed by one of the best bullpens in the league.
