The Blue Jays will be in Minnesota to start a series with the Twins on Thursday night.
Alek Manoah and Sonny Gray are the expected starters in this one which should make for a good matchup.
Toronto is currently a small favorite on the road with a total sitting at 8 runs.
Toronto Blue Jays
The Blue Jays lost to the Rays by a score of 3-2 a day after they beat their rival 3-1. It was a good chance to take both from Tampa when they were struggling but they had to settle for the split.
As we know, the offense for this team is more than capable of scoring runs in high amounts, but that just did not happen in their last series. Part of it was the strong pitching by their opponent, but another part of it was the lack of execution by the Jays.
In the loss on Wednesday, Yusei Kikuchi went four innings and allowed two earned runs while striking out five batters. It would have been nice to see him give better length but he was still solid in the time he was out there.
The bullpen for Toronto has been questionable this season and it was Adam Cimber who could not get the job done last time out.
He went just 0.1 innings and allowed two hits and one earned run which turned out to be the game-winning run. In a spot like that with so few runs being scored, the margin of error is very small for the relievers and he just was not able to do what he needed to do.
As they hit the road to face the Twins, the Jays should feel confident, but they are going to have to have a better offensive attack when they take on a Minnesota team that can really score some runs.
Toronto will be sending just the guy they want out to the mound on Thursday. Alek Manoah quickly went from being a nice story to one of the top hurlers in the sport.
The right-hander comes into this contest with a record of 11-5 and an ERA of 2.43. He might not win every game, but his team should always feel confident in their chances when he takes the hill because more often than not, he is going to put forth a strong outing.
Minnesota Twins
The Twins split the first two games with the Tigers and then beat Detroit 4-1 on Wednesday to get the series win over a team that just has not been good all year long.
Joe Ryan did a very good job of bouncing back after he got hit very hard against the Padres last time out. Those kinds of starts are bound to happen during a season, but it was still good to see him respond the way he did.
The righty went five innings while allowing three hits and just one earned run. Also, he was able to pick up nine strikeouts in the victory.
Newly acquired Michael Fulmer did not waste any time being productive against his former team as he went one inning without allowing an earned run.
Jorge Lopez, another newly acquired arm in this Minnesota bullpen, was impressive with his new squad and was able to pick up the save with relative ease.
The Twins knew they had some talented arms in their pen, but they still had to get better in that area. It will be interesting to see how some of their new relievers do for the remainder of the season.
Offensively, these guys did not do a ton last time out, but it was enough to get the job done. Sandy Leon picked up two hits and two RBI while Gio Urshela and Carlos Correa picked up one RBI apiece.
Sonny Gray will get the ball in the first game against the Jays and he will have a big challenge in front of him. He has been solid this season, but when he has been off just a tick, he has gotten hit very hard which he hopes will not happen against this offense.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Blue Jays are 10-2 in their last 12 games vs. a right-handed starter.
- The Blue Jays are 5-4 in their last 9 games vs. a team with a winning record.
- The Twins are 6-22 in their last 28 games following a win.
- The Twins are 1-7 in their last 8 Thursday games.
Toronto Blue Jays vs. Minnesota Twins MLB Prediction:
The Blue Jays did not end their series with the Rays how they would have liked, but I see them bouncing back here.
Manoah will have a tall task in keeping this lineup in check, but I feel he can do so. He was not exceptionally sharp last time and this is a good chance for him to get back on track.
As far as Gray goes, I do think he can be effective here, but the offense for Toronto should still be able to do enough against him and that pen.
I like the Jays laying a short price on the road.
