Toronto Blue Jays
The Jays are playing some inspired ball. Heading into Monday they have won five of six and have a winning record on the road at 10-8. They could be cathing the Marlins at a good time too.
Teoscar Hernandez has emerged as the Jays most dangerous hitter. He leads the team in homers and this season is willing to shorten up when single will do, leading to his walk-off hit for the win on Sunday afternoon.
Toronto is a little light on starting pitching right now which is why they traded for Taijuan Walker.
Chase Anderson is getting the start on Monday but it is hard to predict who will get the ball here.
One thing you might not know is that the Jays bullpen has been terrific. They are second in WAR in the Majors as a group.
Miami Marlins
The Marlins are in second place in the NL East but they might have lost the magic they had earlier – they are a game under .500 heading into Monday action.
Despite their playoff proximity, I am not expecting the Marlins to be acquirers before the trade deadline. It’s not that they don’t have needs it just not worth giving up anything for the future at this point.
Though the Marlins are still struggling with injuries and recovering from COVID-19 they are also desperately searching for more bats. They just can’t score enough to support solid pitching.
Trevor Rogers is slated for Monday which I think lines up Elieser Hernandez for Tuesday at home. He has been solid but prone to giving up homers.
Miami can pitch, it is what has been making them more competitive than expected.
