The Blue Jays and Angels will be squaring off in the 2nd game of their series on Friday evening in Anaheim.
The probable starters in this one are Alek Manoah and Chase Silseth.
Toronto is laying a short price on the road at the moment. At every place I have checked, the total is listed at 8.
Toronto Blue Jays
When you look at all the chatter and hype that they got before the season started, the Blue Jays have not been a very impressive team this season. To say that they have been would be blind to reality.
If you listened to all the pundits, it was a foregone conclusion that the Jays were going to be a contender and a threat to everyone in the AL. Forget about playing the games because they were just going to waltz right into the playoffs.
When you look at their roster, it does make sense as to why people were bullish on them but let us not forget that there are always flavors of the week that never materialize. Sure, they could figure things out but they have not shown a whole lot of reasons to believe that.
If you were to go on talent alone, this group should be in 1st place in the AL East. There is no question they are the best team on paper in that division but that has not meant much in 2022.
When lofty expectations are given to a team, they are expected to perform and if they do not, they should be prepared to be criticized. Plain and simple.
A lot of people do not want to admit it but a part of their inconsistent start can certainly be attributed to their pitching. In my eyes, the only starters that can be trusted are Gausman and Manoah. Everyone else is hit or miss and that has been well documented.
Also, the bullpen has some work to do. Despite the fact that they feature some guys with good stuff, I would not call it a true strength of theirs. I think a lot of teams have the approach of getting to their starter so they can take their chances with their relievers.
Toronto started off the series with the Angels in good fashion with a 6-3 win and Hyun Jin Ryu looked sharp. Alek Manoah will look to keep up his strong pitching in the middle game.
LA Angels
The Angels are an example of a team that had a lot of people talking about them but they have actually lived up to it. The big question for them is whether or not they will be able to sustain their strong play.
I certainly acknowledge the high level they have played at for the season but it still would not shock me if they went back to their old ways of being a middling team. It almost seems like it is in their DNA to just be average.
Despite what their past history shows, this start for them does not seem to be smoke and mirrors. They were a team that was thought to be improved and so far, they have shown it.
To me, it is fair to say they are one of the better teams in the AL and will make the playoffs. When people start saying they are a World Series threat or could make a deep playoff run, I think there is some exaggeration.
There is a difference between being a solid group and a contender. When you look at some of the more recent champions, I do not put them on that level.
I am critical about this area a lot but the reality is a lot of teams could really use some improved pitching and Los Angeles is no different. I feel the rotation and pen they feature are good and could win them the division. However, I do not believe it is deep and talented enough to make a deep run or win a title.
In terms of their offense, I really like that part of their game and it is a clear strength of theirs. If they could figure out a way to bolster their pitching department, then I would certainly be even higher on this team and look at them differently.
Shohei Ohtani went 6 innings, allowed 5 earned runs, and punched out 10 in the series opener. He was not his vintage self but he did give his team a chance to win. Chase Silseth will now have the tall task of keeping this Toronto lineup in check.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Blue Jays are 5-2 in their last 7 Friday games.
- The Blue Jays are 6-2 in their last 8 games vs. a right-handed starter.
- The Angels are 12-5 in their last 17 home games.
- The Angels are 3-8 in their last 11 games as a home dog.
Toronto Blue Jays vs. LA Angels MLB Prediction:
The Blue Jays started off the series just how they wanted to. I look for them to have a similar approach in this one.
Toronto has the clear advantage in terms of starting pitcher and they have the more explosive offense which I feel they will put on display.
With Manoah on the mound, they should always feel good with their chances. This spot is a very tough one for Silseth and I just do not have a ton of faith he can keep this lineup quiet.
I will lay the short price with the Jays here.
