Toronto Blue Jays
The Blue Jays have taken a late lead against Boston on Saturday night.
They have to protect a one-run lead for six more outs to pull even with the Red Sox in the AL East Division standings. Of course, that’s just for last place.
The offense has started ice cold. Of the regulars, only Teoscar Hernandez (187) and Lourdes Gurriel (103) have OPS+ in the triple-digits.
Vlad Guerrero Jr. came into Saturday’s game hitting just .214 with one home run but he still manages to hover around the league’s average OPS because of his doubles and walk numbers.
He won’t stay cold for the whole season, even in a significantly shorter one.
Boston Red Sox
Rafael Devers has started even colder for Boston.
He was one of the best hitters in the game last season and he still is; he just hasn’t looked anything close to it yet this season.
Devers entered Saturday’s game hitting .184 and he has so far gone 0-for-4.
Nate Eovaldi is Boston’s only starting pitcher who could be called competent. It’s a sad situation when you feel like Eovaldi’s turn in the rotation is a special opportunity to get a win.
He’s gone six innings once and five innings twice, with 14 strikeouts and three walks all totaled up.
