The Rangers and Guardians will begin a series on Monday evening.
Jon Gray and Cal Quantrill are the starters in this one.
Cleveland is a small favorite at the moment. The total opened at 8.5 and has now jumped to 9.
Texas Rangers
It is fair to say that the Rangers have been better than they have been in past seasons. They have not been anything great but it is certainly a good sign to see their improvement as a club.
This team putting a better product on the field and frankly, racking up more wins was expected from them in 2022. I do not feel this kind of play is all that surprising to baseball fans.
Given the kind of additions that they made to their roster in the off-season, it was realistic to expect they would no longer be in the basement. However, to think they would be some sort of contender was still wishful thinking.
Despite being more talented than they were a year ago, this Texas team still has plenty of areas in which it can improve in. If you are a fan, you are hoping the money they spent to bring in Seager, Semien, Gray, etc, is just the beginning of what the front office is willing to do in order to improve their team.
One area that you could point to as a reason why they have struggled in past seasons and are still part of this season, is the pitching. I would say that part of their game is a bit better but I still would not call it a true strength.
The rotation does have some solid arms in it but I would still like to see them beef it up with some more top-end guys. Also, the bullpen is very up-and-down and it really is hard to trust them in that department at the moment.
The lineup looks more dangerous than it has in a while but I do not feel it strikes fear into opposing pitchers. If they get matched up with a team that features lots of depth at pitching, it might not go the way the Rangers want it to go.
On the mound in the opener with Cleveland is Jon Gray and he needs to get back on track. The righty comes into the contest with a record of 1-2 and an ERA near 5.
Cleveland Guardians
The Guardians have pretty much been what I expected from them this season. There have not been a whole lot of surprises with them so far.
The way that I projected them heading into the year was as a middler. Given where they are through nearly 50 games, that is likely where they will end up.
Look, this team is clearly not the most talented squad out there but they are also not talentless. Because of that, they will win a decent amount of games but it likely will not lead to much when everything is settled.
One thing I do feel is evident with them is their lack of depth. They have good players mixed around their roster but they do not have a lot of them in any one area, which is an issue.
The bottom line with Cleveland is they have to bolster their rotation, acquire some better bullpen arms, and insert more consistent hitters in the lineup to support Jose Ramirez. I know it is easy to say but there is still a major question mark as to whether this team will spend the money to do so.
If they stay as constituted, I feel you will keep on seeing more of the same from them. The Tribe will repeatedly be a team that hovers around.500 and likely will finish behind either Chicago or Minnesota.
The Guardians went into Baltimore and took 2 of 3 from the Orioles over the weekend. Of course, they would have liked to sweep but what they need to focus on is winning the series.
In the 3-2 victory on Sunday, Zach Plesac went 6 innings, allowed 2 earned runs, and struck out 8 batters. The offense did not do a lot for Cleveland but that did not matter due to the strong pitching. Cal Quantrill will get the opportunity to have similar results in game 1 with the Rangers.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Rangers are 5-2 in their last 7 vs. a team with a losing record.
- The Rangers are 40-85 in their last 125 games as a road dog.
- The Guardians are 5-1 in their last 6 vs. a team with a losing record.
- The Guardians are 4-1 in their last 5 when their opponent allows 5 runs or more in the previous game.
Texas Rangers vs. Cleveland Guardians MLB Prediction:
This is a good chance for the Guardians to keep up their strong play. Although they are improved, Cleveland knows this is a team they should take care of.
Quantrill has been effective for a good part of this season but the win/loss record has not been where he wants. To me, this is a game where he should be able to get into the win column if he is on his game.
Really, I do not have a lot of confidence in Gray in this spot. He simply has not been very effective this season and there is not a lot that makes me think he will be able to have success on Monday.
I like the Guardians laying a short price at home.
