Texas Rangers
The Rangers come into Fenway Park Thursday losers of four in a row.
But Texas has outscored opponents since the All-Star Break, despite a losing record.
In fact, the Rangers have outscored opponents on the season and are a game over .500 according to the Pythagorean expectation, opposed to the 13 games under .500 they are in reality.
Dallas Keuchel has an impressive career resume, including a Cy Young, a World Series Championship, two All-Star appearances, and five Gold Gloves.
He’s no longer a pitcher of that caliber, however. He’s been well below the league average since last season and the Rangers are his third team this season.
He pitched into the sixth inning in his Texas debut last weekend but he wound up getting hit hard in the sixth and had to be lifted.
All told, the lefty surrendered 11 hits and seven runs (all earned). He struck out one and walked one in the rarest of stat lines for a starting pitcher in today’s game.
Boston Red Sox
Keuchel’s last win came against Boston back on May 8 when he was still a member of the Chicago White Sox.
He went six innings at Fenway Park and allowed eight but just two runs, striking out six and walking one.
The Red Sox salvaged a win in Minnesota after losing the first three of the series with a 6–5 win on Wednesday.
Michael Wacha went six and left with a 6–2 lead and the bullpen just barely held onto the win for him.
Xander Bogaerts and JD Martinez both went deep in the win, which served as a reminder at just how power-starved both guys have been this season.
Bogaerts now has 12 home runs on the season; Martinez’s blast was just his 11th.
Martinez has two homers in the last week but since the middle of June he has just one other long ball. He’s in the final year of his contract and figures to be in line for a deal far more modest given his paltry second half statistics.

- Over is 3-1-1 in the last 5 meetings.
Texas Rangers vs. Boston Red Sox MLB Prediction:
If Keuchel pitched as well as he did against Boston back in May, he very well could be in line for at least a decent start in this spot against a lineup really struggling.
Nick Pivetta always seems to find a way to get up for his starts, even in a sleepy September spot between two teams that will not qualify for this year’s postseason.
He won’t give in to Keuchel easily so bank on this one staying under on a Friday night at the Fens.
