The Rays will be in Texas to start off a series with the Rangers on Monday evening.
Tampa is currently laying the 135 on the road here with the total set at 8.
Drew Rasmussen will be going up against Glenn Otto in this tilt.
Tampa Bay Rays
The Rays might not be quite as good as they have been in past seasons but they are once again playing a solid brand of baseball.
For the most part, they have been consistent this season but it seems as if they have been playing even better as of late. This is a team that is playing with a rhythm right about now.
Even though they did not get off to the best start in the world, it was only a matter of time before this group got back on track and started playing how they should be. To me, they are not the team that people get nervous about when they start off slow.
A lot of folks talk about the AL East and quickly think of the Yankees and Jays as being the top teams in there but I would beg to differ. It is clear that New York is the standard in the division this season but I would say Tampa is their biggest threat in the division and the next best team.
To me, Toronto is a team that is vastly overrated and has certainly underperformed. Until they prove they can play on a more consistent level, it is hard for me to put them as a true threat.
The Rays faced the aforementioned Yankees in their past series and they split the four games. After they dropped the first two, they were able to beat New York in the next two.
As is the case every year, the head-to-head matchups within this division are so important. Because that was the first time that Tampa and New York faced this season, it is fair to say the results of those games will likely determine the winner of it.
Drew Rasmussen will get the ball in the opener with Texas and he will look to keep up his strong pitching. The righty comes into this contest with a record of 5-1 and a 2.68 ERA.
Texas Rangers
The Rangers have not been anything great this season but they have at least been relevant and that is a step in the right direction. With this team, there are going to be a lot of baby steps.
I have at least been encouraged by what I have seen from this group on occasions this season. When you look at a lot of their previous seasons, they were a total bottom feeder and there was not a ton of positivity to report about them.
Going into the season, it was expected that Texas would at least be better but there were certainly question marks. As we have seen countless times before, adding players does not always result in more wins.
What the Rangers did in acquiring people like Semien, Seager, and Gray was a good start but is still far from complete. Those guys give the team a good base but it is still very important that they continue to add pieces to help their team win at a higher level.
One area that really needs to be addressed with this club is their pitching. If I were part of their front office, I would do what it takes to add some proven arms in the rotation and bullpen. Especially on a team like this, you can never have enough pitching.
I still feel the journey for this team to being a true threat in the AL is going to be a long one but they at least have a path. It is important that they continue to build their team and are not content with just what they have now.
Despite losing the final game with Oakland, Texas did what they had to do against the A’s in their last series and they took three of four. They did just what they had to do against a team like that.
Dane Dunning went 4.1 innings and allowed 2 earned runs in their loss on Sunday. Glenn Otto is the next man up in the rotation and he will have a tall order in front of him when he tries to contain this Tampa offense.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Rays are 9-3 in their last 12 games vs. the AL West.
- The Rays are 43-20 in their last 63 games on Monday.
- The Rangers are 1-4 in their last 5 games vs. a right-handed starter.
- The Rangers are 7-21 in their last 28 games vs. the AL East.
Tampa Bay Rays vs. Texas Rangers MLB Prediction:
This game and really, this series is one that I feel the Rays match up well against. It is important they will be able to exploit that.
Tampa has the advantage in terms of their starter, their lineup, and their bullpen. It is going to take a lot for Texas to be all that effective here and I am banking on them not doing so.
Otto’s numbers have been shaky at best this season and he certainly does not have the best track record against top lineups in this sport. He got taken to the woodshed against the Red Sox a little bit ago and when he faces this Tampa offense, I look for similar results.
I like the Rays laying the runs in Arlington.
