The Rays will continue their west coast trip as they head to Seattle to take on the Mariners on Thursday.
Shane McClanahan will be nodded up against fellow lefty Robbie Ray in this one.
Right now, Tampa Bay is a slight favorite on the road.
Tampa Bay Rays
The Rays started off the season kind of up and down but it does seem like they are getting back to where people thought they would. It was only a matter of time before they started playing the brand of baseball that we all have become used to seeing.
As you look at their schedule, they definitely had some questionable losses in the early part of it. They have not faced the toughest teams but it still seems like they are getting into a groove that they just were not in a little bit ago.
On Wednesday, Tampa beat the A’s by a score of 3-0 and completed the sweep of Oakland. They were quite impressive in that series and will look for that to carry over into the one with the Mariners starting on Thursday.
The Rays did just what they had to do against a bad Oakland team. They knew they were the better club and put that on full display.
This will already be the second series that they have faced off with the Mariners. Tampa took two out of three from them at the Trop a little while ago and now they will aim to win the series again in Seattle.
Whenever a team is on a long west coast trip like this, it has to feel good to start it off with a sweep. It does not matter the type of team they beat, they will take it.
Corey Kluber looked very sharp in the finale of the series on Wednesday as he went 6 innings, did not allow an earned run, and struck out 7 batters, as they blanked the Athletics.
Shane Mclanahan will start things off for this group on Thursday and his team ought to feel very confident when he is on the mound. Even though he has only been in the league for a short bit, this young man has been awfully impressive and he seems like he is one of the next best young pitchers this game has to offer.
Seattle Mariners
The Mariners started off the season a little better than they are playing now but it does seem like they have come back to Earth recently.
I still feel they are a solid team and could compete for their division but they are not on the level of a top team in the AL. Not yet at least.
If they keep building their team with the necessary pieces like they have been doing, it is very reasonable to feel they could be a true threat in the near future. They would still have to make some big moves for that to happen this year.
As we know, they play in a very competitive division. The A’s may be having a down year but the Angels seem to be better than they have in past years and of course, there are the Astros who have owned this division for a while now.
Houston just completed the sweep of the Mariners on Wednesday by winning 7-2. That series with them was certainly a reality check for Seattle and they will have to use that as a learning experience.
Quite frankly, the M’s really did not look very good at all in their last series. They got blanked in two of them and when they did score some runs, they still lost by five. That has to get much better when they welcome the Rays into town but it certainly does not get any easier.
Matt Brash went 3 innings and allowed 4 earned runs in the loss in the finale. After he left, the bullpen did not do a helluva lot better.
Robbie Ray will be on the bump for this one and he will be facing a squad he is quite familiar with. It certainly is never an easy task when you have to navigate through that Tampa lineup.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Rays are 4-0 in their last 4 games on grass.
- The Rays are 4-0 in their last 4 games against the Al West.
- The Mariners are 1-4 in their last 5 games on grass.
- The Mariners are 1-5 in their last 6 games vs. a lefty.
Tampa Bay Rays vs. Seattle Mariners MLB Prediction:
Oh man, this is one helluva pitching matchup. That alone should make for a good game.
To me, the Rays are the better team but this one is not going to be easy for them. I expect Seattle to keep things quite close.
It is very reasonable to expect that Ray and McClanahan match each other pitch for pitch. The 1.5 runs are too much for me to lay in this game even with a very good Tampa team.
My play is Seattle on the run line.
