Tampa Bay Rays
Tampa Bay had a chance to sweep Colorado on Wednesday after taking three of four against the Astros and winning the first two against the Rockies.
German Marquez and Colorado’s bullpen shutout Tampa for 11 innings in that one, to win 1–0 and avoid the Tropicana Field brooms. Charlie Morton was excellent for the second-straight time in a Rays’ uniform in defeat.

Thursday was the first travel day of the regular season and Friday was the first road win in the first road game of 2019. Tyler Glasnow went six shutout innings and only Wilmer Font gave up a couple runs in the ‘pen. Jose Alvarado nailed down his third save of the season in the win.
Yandy Diaz returned to the starting lineup, too, playing third base with both Matt Duffy and Joey Wendle on the mend. Both have bad hamstrings but Duffy’s is worse. He won’t back until sometime in May (at best), while Wendle hopes to be back by the middle of this month.
Tampa Bay won’t be back at home until the 16th, when it hosts Baltimore.
San Francisco Giants
Everything is exciting about Tampa Bay and nearly nothing gets me going about the Giants.
San Francisco signed Kevin Pillar to take over centerfield in the offseason. He plays exciting defense but there isn’t much else to an aging centerfielder with, at best, an average bat.

Otherwise, it’s the same cast of veteran characters that made up last year’s forgettable team: Evan Longoria, Buster Posey, Brandon Belt, Brandon Crawford, etc. I don’t feel quite right listing them as if they are all old and washed-up. They can all still play. It just feels like they’re closer to being old and washed-up than taking the Giants anywhere in the playoffs.
Drew Pomeranz wasn’t bad in his first start as a Giant but I suspect “not bad” will be about as good as it gets for Pom this season.
