Tampa Bay Rays
The Rays are banged up and they aren’t beating bad teams convincingly as an American League playoff-bound team should be.
They are winning, though. The Rays swept the Mariners over the weekend, outscoring the worst team in the AL West by just four runs over the three wins.

That’s all to Tampa Bay’s credit, at this point. They are without Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, Yonny Chirinos, Jose Alvarado, Brandon Lowe, and even Joey Wendle. The A’s have played well but the Rays have fended them off.
Tampa enters Monday with a 1.5-game lead over Oakland and is actually only 2.5 back of Cleveland, which leads the Wild Card. It will just a three-team race to the finish.
Diego Castillo will open on Monday, perhaps for Jalen Beeks after Ryan Yarbrough tossed an 8.2-inning gem on Sunday. The rookie, Brendan McKay will start this one.
San Diego Padres
McKay isn’t overpowering but if he were, he’d be elite. He just isn’t there yet. He’s a rookie with terrific stuff, makeup, and command. His stuff is hittable, especially in the AL East.
Against San Diego at Petco Park, McKay should do great. He pitches to contact and keeps hitters off balance. I expect him to get through six and make it a quality start to boot.

In some ways, Eric Lauer is a similar pitcher. He is going up against a little bit more difficult opponent than he’s used to seeing, outside of the Dodgers, in the NL West. That should be the difference.
