Tampa Bay Rays
Tampa Bay beat Seattle by a run on Saturday, 5–4, and has a chance to sweep the Mariners on the road on Sunday with Ryan Yarbrough on the mound.
Since Oakland lost in Chicago, the Rays now have a 1.5-game lead for the final playoff spot in the American League. There’s still a long way to go but Tampa Bay’s schedule is favorable and the Rays are getting some horses back next month. Oakland doesn’t want to fall much further behind.

Those horses should be Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, and Yonny Chirinos, a pretty darn good playoff rotation in and of itself. All three have been out and all three are expected back in September.
Exactly when in September and how effective they will be has yet to be seen. Glasnow has missed the most time, of course, having been setback a couple of times now.
All Tampa Bay is trying to do is hold on until it gets its pitching back. After finishing this West Coast road trip, the Rays return home to play Detroit and Seattle before jetting off to Baltimore.
San Diego Padres
Manny Margot hit a three-run homer late in the game on Saturday to help the Padres to an 8–5 win over Colorado, their third in a row.
San Diego has a chance to sweep the four-game series on Sunday and then stay right at home, where it will welcome the Rays.

In nearly 145 career innings, Dinelson Lamet has a WHIP under 1.25. His ERA isn’t quite as good as you would expect it to be for someone with that kind of baserunner prevention but the Rays’ offense is nearly as banged up as the pitching staff so he could be in for a nice night.
