Tampa Bay Rays
I would say that the Rays have treaded water this season but they certainly have not been anything all that great. They have done a lot of trading wins and losses.
In the early going, a lot of their flaws have been exposed, most notably in the pitching department. Sure, they do have some talented arms, but they are not very deep in that category and other teams have been taking advantage of that.
Given the kind of team they are, I would expect them to get more consistent as the year goes on but there is no guarantee of that. It is very possible that what they have done so far is what you are going to see from them during the entire season.
As we all know, the AL East is very competitive and they do not look like one of the better teams in that division at the moment. It is very clear that the Yankees and the Blue Jays are the two best teams there and it really is not all that close.
Coming into this series with Oakland, Tampa has a record of 12-10 and they are in 3rd place in the East. They trail the Yankees by 4 games at the moment but if they are not careful that number could get higher as the year goes on.
Even though they won the first game of the series against the Twins, they did not look very good in that series with Minnesota as they dropped the next two games by scores of 9-1 and 9-3. That is not a good look for them at all.
Josh Fleming went 3.2 innings and allowed 5 earned runs in their loss on Sunday. That kind of outing is just not going to get it done against a lineup like that.
The Rays really will be looking for a strong start out of Drew Rasmussen on Monday and there is reason to believe he can deliver that. He comes into the game with a record of 1-1 and an ERA of 3.5.
Oakland Athletics
It has been an up-and-down season for the A’s so far. It has not been quite as bad as some predicted out of the gate but it also has not been anything special.
Everyone acknowledged that it was going to be a down year for this team which makes a ton of sense. They are in a rebuild mode at the moment and do not have the necessary players to compete at a very high level.
I am not saying they have zero talent but it certainly is not enough to be a true threat in their division or league. It is going to take some time for them to get back to their old form.
This series with the Rays will be no easy one for this group. Sure, it might not be a vintage Tampa team but they are still the better team in a lot of areas and can present some issues for them.
Oakland hosted the Guardians this weekend and let’s just say things did not go very well for the home team. They got outscored by a 19-12 margin and did not look very good in the finale as they lost 7-3. It will not get any easier for them starting on Monday evening.
In the loss on Sunday, James Kaprielian lasted just 2 innings and allowed 4 earned runs. Also, the offense did not have any answers for Triston McKenzie who was quite sharp in his outing.
Daulton Jefferies will get the tall task of shutting down this Tampa offense. He does not have a great record but the ERA is not one to throw rocks at.

After a tough series for the Rays against the Twins, this is a good opportunity for them to get back on track when they face off with Oakland and I would expect them to do so.
Tampa has the starting pitching advantage here to go along with a better pen and lineup. To me, this is a good matchup for them.
Jefferies may be able to keep his team in it for a bit but as the game goes on, I just feel the Rays will be too much for this team to handle. I can see this turning out to be a game where the offense will not be an issue.
