Tampa Bay Rays

Tampa Bay has lost two of its first three games at home to Boston and has one to go on Sunday to wrap up the first four-gamer.

The Rays haven’t made their starting rotation perfectly clear yet because I don’t think it’s even perfectly clear to them who is going to get the innings when.

Kevin Cash has said that he is going to use a four-man rotation and designate that fifth day to the bullpen. That’s kind of what he did on Saturday in game number three, though.

His starter got ten outs and gave up one run; the next guy in got 12 outs and also gave up one. The pitching wasn’t the problem, though. Rick Porcello and Boston’s bullpen was a run better in an eventual 3–2 win.

New York Yankees

The Yankees lost for the first time this season on Saturday when Dellin Betances gaveup the winning runs in a tied game in the eighth inning.

Billy McKinney was also hurt going after a long fly ball in center and banging up against the wall. He had to leave the game and was placed on the DL.

You may not have heard of McKinney and am wondering why this is a big deal, but it’s precisely that you haven’t heard of him which makes it a big deal.

The Yankees have a problem in the outfield. Jacoby Ellsbury is hurt, so is Aaron Hicks and Clint Frazier. When all three are healthy, Bill McKinney isn’t even on the big league club.

But now they have to dig deeper than McKinney. Hicks is supposed to be the first one back of the three established guys. When he’s back in another week, the problems eases but until then, the Yankees are playing with a hole in center field.
