Tampa Bay Rays

Tampa Bay lost a 1–0 shutout on Thursday in the first of four games against the Astros at Tropicana Field. But the pitching staff held strong and limited the powerful Astros’ offense (sans Carlos Correa) to two runs in each of the final three games of the series.

More importantly, the offense got it some run support — just enough. Tampa won 3–2, 5–2 and 3–2 again to take the final three games and finish off a brutally tough stretch in its schedule with remarkable success.

Tampa Bay’s last 16 games have all come against New York, Houston and Washington: seven with both the Yankees and ‘Stros and two with the Nats. It started 0–3 but finished by winning 10 of the final 13, including eight of the last nine.

Over those final nine games, the pitching staff allowed 13 runs and six of them came in a single game, the game Jake Bauers won with a walk-off home run in extra innings.

Now over .500 for the first time since winning its first game of the season, Tampa Bay will finish July with a cushy schedule that goes: at Miami, at the Mets, vs. Detroit, at Minnesota and home vs. the Fish again.

We don’t know who’s going to start this game yet but it doesn’t really matter. The bullpen is in great shape and should be for this one as long as Nathan Eovaldi doesn’t tank on Monday. Even if he does, the Rays have the deepest pitching staff in baseball and should handle Miami.

Miami Marlins

That said, there are worse teams in baseball than the Marlins, who have played .500 baseball since late-April.

There’s a possibility Jose Urena will be healthy by the time Tuesday rolls around. He hasn’t pitched since June 20 with some minor arm problems but he’s throwing. I suspect the Marlins will let him rehab before he rejoins the big club, though.

This series features the two best offensive catchers in baseball and neither one is particularly well-renowned. JT Realmuto’s 152 OPS+ is the 11th-best in baseball and far and away the best among catchers.

Wilson Ramos is second among backstops at 122, good for 52nd-best in the league.
