The Rays and Angels will be finishing up their series on Wednesday, May 11th.
Shane McClanahan will be opposed by Shohei Ohtani in this contest.
LA is a small favorite at home here with the total set at 7.
Tampa Bay Rays
The Rays have been solid to start the season but this series with the Angels has been the opposite of that for them. They have looked downright dreadful in their first two contests with them.
On Monday, they got smoked by a score of 11-3 and that was not even the worst thing that happened to them in this series thus far.
In the second game of the series, not only did they once again get crushed by a score of 12-0, but they also got no-hit. Getting beat by a lot of runs is going to happen throughout the year but being the team that gets no-hit will always last with a club.
It is also important to remember who no-hit them. It was not as if it was Cy Young out there. They let Reid Detmers, who is a decent starter have his way with them. That is not a good look for them at all.
It certainly is a cliche but they cannot let that game impact their performance for the finale on Wednesday. They have to flush it and focus solely on that game.
Unlike the Angels, the pitching for Tampa was brutal in their last loss and that started with Corey Kluber. The veteran finished the day going 3 innings and allowed 8 earned runs. And by the way, he allowed 11 hits as well.
The pitching certainly has been a weakness for this team throughout the year and it has really been exposed in this series. I am not saying they do not have any good arms but it also is not a vintage Tampa staff and bullpen.
They will turn to their ace, Shane McClanahan in the last game of the series and hope he can turn them around. Whenever he is on the mound, they ought to feel good about their chances of winning.
Los Angeles Angels
The Angels continue to play a very good brand of baseball. It is hard not to be impressed by what they have done so far.
I already liked what I was seeing from this group before this series with the Rays but now I like it even more. They have made statements by their first two victories in the series.
Going into these three games, it was expected that a matchup with the Rays would really test this team and see where they are. It seems like they have taken that personally and played excellent on both sides of the diamond in the two games.
For starters, the offense has been great in this series, as they have scored a combined 23 runs. When you have that kind of production, you should be winning games.
And of course, the pitching has been great. They have held the Rays to just three runs in the first two games which is never an easy thing to do against any lineup, especially one such as theirs.
Reid Detmers had it all going on Tuesday night as he threw the no-no. He went 9 innings, allowed just 1 walked, and fanned 2 batters. It is a great thing to see for that young man.
One thing that I liked to see in his performance is the fact that the strikeout numbers were not very high. Yes, K’s are important at times but they are not always necessary. It is very possible to be an effective pitcher in this league and pitch to contact and he certainly showed that.
Los Angeles will turn to Shohei Ohtani in this one and he has looked pretty good so far. He holds a record of 3-2 with an ERA of 3.08.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Rays are 6-1 in their last 7 during game 3 of a series.
- The Rays are 5-1 in their last 6 Wednesday games.
- The Angels are 4-0 in their last 4 games after scoring 5 runs or more in their previous game.
- The Angels are 9-1 in their last 10 games at home.
Tampa Bay Rays vs. Los Angeles Angels MLB Prediction:
Boy, it is going to be hard for the Rays to play any worse than they have played in the first two games of this one. We shall see what happens on Wednesday evening.
For as great of a night as the previous one was for the Angels, that does not mean it will carry over to this one. I see a close game when all is said and done here.
I would expect both of these starters to be effective but I still see runs being scored, especially when it goes into the hands of the bullpen.
For me, the 7 is a little too low. I like the over.
