The Rays and Angels will be squaring off in the second game of the series on Tuesday evening.
Corey Kluber will be opposed by Reid Detmers.
Tampa is a short favorite on the road here. The total in this one began at 8.5 and I have seen a lot of 8’s out there right now.
Tampa Bay Rays
All in all, I would call what the Rays have done so far as solid. It has not been anything flashy but that is not what they are about.
A little while ago, they did hit a rough patch where they really did not look very good but it does appear as if they are out from that. Of course, that does not mean they are going to be great day in and day out but they will put a good product on the field more times than not.
In terms of their division, the Yankees and Blue Jays are getting a lot of attention and it seems like this team has kind of been overshadowed a bit. As we know, it is never a good idea to count out the Rays.
Through the first 30 games of the year, Tampa went 18-12. It is hard to be all that critical of that mark.
They currently find themselves in 2nd place of the AL East and trail the Yankees by 3 games. As is the case in most years, it should be very entertaining to see the top teams battle it out for the division.
This club certainly did not start off the series the way they wanted against the Angels with an 11-3 loss on Monday. The score sums up what happened for them in that one.
Jeffrey Springs started the first game of the series and went 4 innings while allowing 3 earned runs. After he left, the bullpen clearly did not do their job which led to the offensive attack by the Halos.
Corey Kluber will be tasked with getting his team back on track for game 2. The veteran is not what he once was but he has been effective in a rays uniform so far.
LA Angels
The Angels have played a very good brand of baseball so far. There is no question they are an impressive club at the moment.
This is a team that had a lot of hype surrounding them heading into the season and the question was whether or not they would be able to live up to it. As baseball fans, we have become so used to them being mediocre that there certainly was reasonable skepticism about how they would do in ’22.
Of course, there is still a ton of baseball to be played yet and what they have done could certainly be smoke and mirrors. Even with the strong start, there are still fans that doubt them and feel they will eventually revert back to their old ways. Time will tell on that one.
I know everyone gets giddy because of what their offense features but I still do not feel this is a totally complete club. They have made strides in that department but still have work to do if they want to be a true threat and not a pretender.
To me, the pitching is decent but not necessarily great. They could still use some work in the rotation and I do not totally trust the pen.
I think it is certainly very reasonable that LA can compete with the Astros and Mariners for the AL West crown. At this very moment, I would say they do not win it but it does not mean they cannot.
The offense will get a lot of the credit for their game 1 victory and deservedly so but Noah Syndergaard also put forth a very strong start. He went 5.1 innings, allowed 1 earned run, and struck out 7 batters. He has looked quite good with Los Angeles so far and is going to be a huge piece to their team as the season rolls on.
Reid Detmers is on the mound for this one and he really has to be better than he has been. He comes in with a record of 1-1 and an ERA over 5. It will not get any easier for him when he has to face that Tampa offense.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Rays are 5-0 in their last 5 games against a left-handed starter.
- The Rays are 8-2 in their last 10 games on grass.
- The Angels are 8-1 in their last 9 home games.
- The Angels are 4-1 in their last 5 games against the AL East.
Tampa Bay Rays vs. LA Angels MLB Prediction:
The Rays played a stinker in Game 1 and will look to get back to their winning ways in game 2. It would not shock me if they were able to do so here.
Even though the Angels have improved, I still feel Tampa is the better team and I trust them more here. I feel their offense matches up well here and they have the pitching advantage.
Kluber does not have to be great here, but he needs to be solid. If he can do that, I like Tampa here because I expect them to have success against Detmers. I have a hard time seeing him keeping their batters in check for all that long and the same goes for the pen.
Since it is not a lot of juice to lay, I will go with Tampa ML here.
