Tampa Bay Rays
Brady Singer stopped Tampa Bay on Saturday in a 6–3 Kansas City victory.
Singer went six innings, struck out a career-high 12 batters, walked two, and allowed three hits and one earned run.
He didn’t earn the victory for his efforts, however. Kansas City spotted him three runs in the third but Tampa tied the game in the seventh off of Taylor Clarke.
Roman Quinn got the big hit that tied the game. Ryan Yarbrough couldn’t keep the game tied, though.
He has already thrown two innings of relief when he allowed three runs in the seventh.
Bobby Witt Jr. hit a two-run home run after driving in one with a double earlier in the game. Whit Merrifield had three hits and two RBIs himself.
Kansas City didn’t squander its second three-run lead. Scott Barlow came on in the eighth and got the final six outs for his 17th save.
Kansas City Royals
After Brad Keller and Singer in the first two games, Zack Greinke figures to be the starting pitcher for the Royals in the rubber match.
That has yet to be announced, however. Tampa Bay will give the ball to left-hander Jeffrey Springs, though.
Springs’ numbers are excellent on the season — a WHIP just over one and a 2.53 ERA. That’s in 11 starts and eight prior relief appearances.
Springs hasn’t been so good of late, though. He gave up 10 runs in his last three starts before the All-Star Break (14.1 innings).
That isn’t exactly unexpected for a guy starting at the big league level for the first time in his career.
The Rays actually shut him down for some time before the break so he hasn’t pitched in 19 days, going into this start.
Expect him to be sharp now that he has had some time off to regain his strength. He should keep Tampa in this game, even without much offensive support.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Rays are 7-2 in their last 9 games overall.
- The Rays are 37-17 in their last 54 games overall.
- The Royals are 17-35 in their last 52 games vs. a team with a winning record.
Tampa Bay Rays vs. Kansas City Royals MLB Prediction:
Springs will pitch well. The extra rest will do him well and he will keep this Kansas City lineup in line.
But Greinke does the same on the other side, if he’s the starting pitcher. Actually, whoever KC trots out there has a chance to pitch well against a depleted Tampa Bay lineup that’s, frankly, holding the Rays back from getting a stranglehold on an American League Wild Card spot.
The total, when it’s released, will be a low one but for good reason. This game will be a pitcher’s duel.
