Tampa Bay Rays
Tampa Bay has been the best team in baseball thus far but its depth is starting to be stretched.
Austin Meadows went down with a thumb that will keep him out for about a month and put his hot bat on ice. Joey Wendle, just after coming back from an injury, broke his wrist and will miss at least a month. Matt Duffy is still out until late-May. And Ji-Man Choi missed Saturday’s game with a sore calf.

The Rays’ depth is elite and especially when Choi is ready to return (should be soon), Tampa Bay can slide Yandy Diaz to third full-time with Brandon Lowe at second. That lineup is, arguably, better than any with Wendle or Duffy in it. They should be fine but they really don’t want to deal with many more injuries, stretched a bit thin already.
Another problem is the bullpen, which has showed the slightest cracks of late. Diego Castillo hasn’t been light’s out in the ninth and Emilio Pagan actually closed out Tampa Bay’s 2–1 win at Fenway on Saturday.
Of course, Jose Alvarado is still there, as well as a bevy of other arms. I guess my point is that Tampa Bay has some problems to work out, though it also has more than enough resources to work through just about anything that will come up in the regular season.
Yonny Chirinos has turned into the fourth traditional starter for Kevin Cash. Three of those four have a WHIP under 1.00 and Charlie Morton’s is about 1.1. Chirinos has the best: 0.908.
Kansas City Royals
Brad Keller’s last start came in Tampa Bay, where he had given up just two runs through six innings before running to trouble in the seventh. The Rays scored three times off of him in that inning, capped by a Mike Zunino two-run homer.
Keller is a Rule 5 guy who posted a 140 ERA+ in 140 innings for the Royals last season. He’s off to a similar start this season, with actually a better strikeout rate and WHIP.
