The Rays will be facing the Orioles for the third game of their series on Wednesday evening.
Drew Rasmussen and Tyler Wells are the slated starters in this ball game.
Tampa Bay is a pretty small favorite on the road for now. I have seen a few 8.5’s pop up for the total, but am still mostly seeing 8.
Tampa Bay Rays
After dropping the final two against the Royals and dropping the first two against the Orioles, the losing streak for the Rays is 4. I would not call it a cause for concern, but they really have to get back on track.
Although they are playing an improved team, these guys went into this series with Baltimore hoping to do some damage and that has not been the case. In the first couple of contests, they have looked pretty flat.
Something that has been pretty clear in the first two losses of the week is the lack of offense for Tampa. Being able to score just four runs in two games is not going to get it done.
Sure, Corey Kluber could have been more effective in the opener, but he gave his team a shot. On Tuesday, Shane McClanahan went 7 innings while allowing just 2 earned runs but had nothing to show for it. Coln Poche lasted just 0.1 innings and allowed 3 earned runs, which blew the game for them.
I do not feel the Rays are in danger of missing the postseason, but they have to start playing more consistent baseball. There seem to be too many times this season where they just have not shown up in games and that is not going to work in October.
Despite dropping the first two, Tampa still has two games to play. Given how the first half of the series went, they would definitely take a split against their rival.
Drew Rasmussen will be getting the ball for this one and I have liked what I have seen for the most part. He does not always go very deep into games, but he mostly has been effective this season.
If Tampa wants to have success in this one, they are going to have to play a complete game. They have done certain things well in this series, but they just have not put it all together.
Baltimore Orioles
The Orioles have done just what they could have asked for in these first two contests with the Rays and will look to keep it up for the final two of the series.
The starting pitching still concerns me with this group, but there is no question about how talented and effective this bullpen is. When their relievers take the mound, there is a very good chance they will get the job done.
Given their current situation, Baltimore is not a team that has to get lights-out performances from the starters. If they can at least do solid and give some sort of length, they feel confident the rest of the game can be in the hands of the bullpen.
In the 5-3 win on Tuesday, Spenser Watkins went 5.1 innings while allowing 10 hits and 3 earned runs. He once again did not miss a ton of bats, but it was not as if that led to a Tampa Bay offensive explosion. He was really able to limit the damage, which is always a key.
After Watkins departed, the combo of Joey Krehbiel, Keegan Akin, and Jorge Lopez went 3.2 innings and did not allow an earned run. Those pitchers might not be the most well-known in the sport, but they were able to get the job done when called upon.
So far, the offense has not done anything off the charts in this series, but they have been solid. There is nothing wrong with scoring 5 runs in each game and getting the win in both of them.
Some teams have to score a ton of runs because they cannot trust their bullpen, but the Birds are not one of them. If they can at least produce some sort of offense, then I feel they can be in a majority of their contests.
Baltimore will now turn to Tyler Wells and I have liked what I have seen from him at times and there is a clear upside with him. Some of the numbers might not stand out, but he has been able to put forth some solid outings this year, and he will look to be sharper than he was in his last start against the Yankees.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Rays are 11-1 in their last 12 vs. a team with a winning record.
- The Rays are 10-3 in their last 13 Wednesday games.
- The Orioles are 35-77 in their last 112 vs. the AL East.
- The Orioles are 109-262 in their last 371 vs. a team with a winning record.
Tampa Bay Rays vs. Baltimore Orioles MLB Prediction:
The Rays have not shown a ton in this series, but this is a good chance for them to do so.
I am not banking on Tampa crushing Wells, but they have the bats to at least do some damage. Their best hope is to get to him because having success against that bullpen has not happened a lot.
If Rasmussen can be solid here and get better run support than the previous two Tampa starters, then I can see the Rays taking a close one on the road.
My play is Tampa as the short favorite.
