The Rays will continue their road trip and head to Baltimore to take on the Orioles for the first game of their series on Monday evening.
Corey Kluber and Austin Voth are the opposing starters in this ball game.
Tampa Bay is a small favorite on the road with a total set at 9 runs.
Tampa Bay Rays
Just when the Rays seem to find something, they still take a few steps backward. I am not saying it is time to panic with this group, but they do have some questions surrounding them for sure.
For the whole season now, I have never really felt like they have been able to get into a true rhythm. They do play well in bursts and seem like they could sustain it for a while, but that has not happened a ton.
Despite them not playing as consistently as they should be, I am still high on them. There is no question they are dealing with some key injuries and when they are truly loaded, I still view them as a very dangerous team that could be a threat in the postseason.
In their last 10 games, this team is 7-3 and for the most part, they have looked sharp. Perhaps I am focusing too much on their most recent series, but that still does not make how they performed acceptable.
Coming out of the break, the goal for Tampa Bay was to go into Kansas City and pick up the sweep. After earning the 7-3 win on Friday, they did not play great baseball in the remaining two games and ended up losing the series.
In that series, I thought the offense for the Rays should have done a much better job. It was not as if the Royals were putting great arms out on the mound, but they still found ways to largely be effective.
Tampa will get a chance to get back on track starting on Monday, but I do not expect this to be an easy game or series. The O’s have given them trouble at times this season and that could certainly happen once again.
Corey Kluber will be on the hill for the opener and overall, he has been solid for the Rays. There is no question he is no longer the same guy, but he still has been able to be effective at times. There have been outings in which he has gotten hit fairly hard, but has been able to limit the damage.
Baltimore Orioles
All season long, the Orioles have been one of the more surprising teams in baseball. Some folks might have thought they would be improved this season, but I do not think a lot had them at the point they are at now.
For the first time in what seems like forever, this team is once again relevant. As baseball fans, we all got so used to them being a doormat, so this is definitely a little different to see.
For a good part of this season, they were clearly playing better, but the playoffs still did not seem reasonable. Now, that is no longer the case. I am not saying it is going to happen, but Baltimore being in the postseason could very well happen.
Coming into this game, the Birds hold a record of 47-48 and they trail the Red Sox by half a game. As far as the wild card is concerned, they are 3.5 games out of the last spot.
Over the weekend, the Yankees did prove to be too much for them in their three-game set. Baltimore would have liked to win that series, but they had to know the chances of that happening were fairly low, even with a New York team struggling of late.
These guys dropped a close game in the opener, then took care of business in the second game, and got blanked 6-0 on Sunday. They were in the game for a while, but the bats for the Yankees eventually proved to be too much to handle.
The Orioles will now get another chance to take on an al East squad and this one will once again be a challenge. The Rays might not have the same record as the Yankees, but they still have the ability to present them with a lot of issues.
Austin Voth will be getting the start here and it will be interesting to see how long he goes. Overall, he has been a guy that has not been overly effective and that could very well continue on Monday.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Rays are 8-1 in their last 9 vs. the AL East.
- The Rays are 6-2 in their last 8 games vs. a right-handed starter.
- The Orioles are 62-128 in their last 190 games vs. a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15.
- The Orioles are 33-77 in their last 110 vs. the AL East.
Tampa Bay Rays vs. Baltimore Orioles MLB Prediction:
Tampa has not played well in their last couple of games, but I do see them getting back on track in this one.
The Orioles do have some talented arms, but I do not view Voth as one of them. Even if he is not in there a ton, I look for Tampa to do enough against him and scratch off a few from the remaining relievers.
Kluber is no longer the power pitcher he once was, but he still can get the job done. Baltimore might hit him a little bit, but I do not see it being enough in this spot.
Rays as the small favorite is the play for me.
