The Cardinals and Blue Jays will be ending their series on Wednesday night from the Rogers Centre.
Adam Wainwright will be going up against Kevin Gausman, which should make for an interesting matchup.
In this spot, Toronto is massive chalk at home. The initial total of 7.5 has been ticked up half a run across the board.
St. Louis Cardinals
Even with some players missing, the Cardinals were very much in the opener of this series until they really just spiraled out of control as the game went on.
The score was 3-3, but that quickly changed as Toronto added five runs in the 6th inning and two in the 7th inning. Those sorts of collapses just cannot happen for a team like this.
Andre Pallante started things off on the bump and he went 4 innings while allowing 7 hits and 3 earned runs. It would have been nice to see him go longer into the game, but he did not have a ton of answers for that offense. Regardless, he is far from the person to blame for the lopsided final score.
The bullpen has been solid at times this year, but there have also been times it has been unreliable and that was the case on Tuesday.
Jordan Hicks allowed 4 earned runs in just 1.2 innings and Junior Fernandez surrendered 3 earned runs in 1 inning. I know they were facing a very talented and deep lineup, but allowing all those runs should not happen.
Without Goldschmidt and Arenado in the order, it was going to be very hard to produce any type of big offense, and that ultimately held true. When two top hitters are absent, a team can still have success in other ways, but it makes it a lot more difficult.
St. Louis was able to scatter 7 hits off of Jose Berrios, but it did not lead to all that much. When the righty left the game, the Red Birds did not do anything against that bullpen for Toronto.
The veteran Adam Wainwright will be starting here and he is a guy who has pitched a lot better than the record might indicate. There have been plenty of times where he has not gotten the best run support and there is a good chance that takes place with Gausman on the hill.
Toronto Blue Jays
The win streak for the Blue Jays was extended to seven on Tuesday and they do not appear to be slowing down anytime soon.
This club comes into this game 9-1 in their last 10 and for a while now, they are looking like the team a lot of people thought they would be.
After what was an offensive barrage in their previous series with the Red Sox, these guys kept up that theme on Tuesday as they once scored plenty of runs.
With the kind of hitters that are in this lineup on a daily basis, the success on that part of the field should not come as a surprise. There is no question this is one of the best hitting teams in the league and I do not see that changing for the remainder of the year.
George Springer led the way in the opener with 3 hits, 2 runs scored, and 4 RBI. Also, Bo Bichette, Teoscar Hernandez, and Matt Chapman all contributed multi-hit games in the victory.
When Toronto is able to get strong pitching and this kind of offensive production, they make for a very dangerous team and there are lots of teams that want no part in facing them.
The struggles of Jose Berrios have been well-noted this season, but I did like what I saw from him in the first game with the Cardinals. He was able to limit the damage and record 7 punchouts, which he will need to continue.
Kevin Gausman will get the ball in the finale and this guy has been incredible this season. The record should be better than 7-7, but there is no denying what he is capable of on a start-to-start basis. When all of his pitches are being mixed up, he is one of the hardest arms to have success off in the MLB.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Cardinals are 16-36 in their last 52 vs. the AL East.
- The Cardinals are 4-10 in their last 14 games when their opponent scores 5 runs or more in their previous game.
- The Blue Jays are 5-0 in their last 5 interleague home games vs. a team with a winning record.
- The Blue Jays are 6-0 in their last 6 games following a win.
St. Louis Cardinals vs. Toronto Blue Jays MLB Prediction:
The Blue Jays have been rolling of late and I do not see them slowing down in this spot.
Wainwright is still a very good pitcher, but he is going to have his hands full with this offense and I would expect the Jays to have at least some success off of him.
If Gausman is on his game, I see him putting forth a strong effort against this incomplete lineup and leading his team to victory.
