San Diego was looking for a possible meetup with division foe Los Angeles down the line, but the Padres suddenly are facing elimination after a 7-4 St. Louis win on Wednesday.
The Cardinals thought they’d be at a disadvantage, playing a ton of baseball over the last month and having to travel West for the postseason. The Redbirds are underdogs again on Thursday, but are a win away from advancing.
St. Louis Cardinals
It was a great offensive day for the Cardinals in game one, getting off to a great start with a 4-0 first inning lead. St. Louis belted out 13 hits, but faces a solid San Diego starter as Zach Davies went 7-4 with a sub 3.00 ERA on the year.
The Cardinals were powered by a Paul Goldschmidt home run in game one, familiar hitting at Petco Park from his days with the Diamondbacks. Matt Carpenter has gone 12-25 (.480) with 3HR off Davies though.
Cardinals manager Mike Schildt has to like the pitching situation he’s in with Adam Wainwright on the bump for game two. The veteran has pitched 105+ postseason innings and went into the 8th in two of three starts last year.
San Diego Padres
The big key for San Diego in game two is that their young roster doesn’t get too stressed for the moment. The Padres scored in each of the first three innings on Wednesday, but couldn’t overcome the big 1st from St. Louis.
Manny Machado was 1-5 in game one and Fernando Tatis, Jr. was 1-4 with two runs scored but he also left five men on base. San Diego batters have surprisingly only faced Wainwright 60 times as a team with a collective .250 average.
Chris Paddack continued his late season struggles when he gave up 6 ER in just 2.1 IP on Wednesday. The Padres had to use 7 bullpen pitchers in game one, but think Zach Davies, who didn’t allow 3+ runs in a start all season, can give them a long outing.

Free St. Louis Cardinals vs. San Diego Padres MLB Prediction:
There’s a lot of talented hitters in both dugouts, but Thursday’s tilt looks to be decided by the pitchers. Davies has been steady all season and Wainwright is seasoned in pitching in the playoffs.
4* Free MLB Betting Pick: Under 8.5
Both bullpens are taxed, but the teams combined for just 2 runs after the 3rd inning on Wednesday.
