St. Louis Cardinals
Jack Flaherty had a no-hitter through 6.1 innings on Friday night and exactly 100 pitches. Then Jesus Aguilar stepped to the plate and on pitch 101 went down and golfed a solo homer to left.
Aguilar’s 15th home run of the season erased the no-hitter and even the Cardinals’ lead, which was just 1–0 at that point.
It’s been a rough go of it for St. Louis, which has slipped to 6.5 games out in the NL Central — still in third-place but now outside of shouting distance from both the Brewers and the Cubs (4.5 games).
Like Flaherty, Luke Weaver is another good looking young right-handed starter. But Weaver hasn’t coasted through his first 15 starts. He’s got an ERA right around 4.50, which is below average in this year’s MLB.
Still, he’s proven to be the sort of starter who will consistently keep his team in the game. He’s the sort of guy you’ve seen pitch for the Cardinals dozens of times over the last several seasons.
I didn’t mention how Friday night’s game ended after Aguilar tied it up in the seventh. It remained 1–1 until he got his fourth at-bat, which resulted in another solo home run — this time to right field and this time to win the game.
Aguilar has been so good that he has had to remain the team’s first baseman and middle of the lineup power threat after Eric Thame’s return. He hit fifth last night behind Lorenzo Cain and Travis Shaw.
Thames has been playing the outfield and hitting leadoff. With Christian Yelich hitting second, in-between Thames and Cain, that Brewers’ lineup is lethal in the top half. Even Jonathan Villar hitting sixth has some pop, especially for a second baseman.
The Cubs have a great team but confidence is sky-high in Milwaukee and the Brewers look like a team that is most certainly worthy of a playoff spot.

Tough to bet against this team at home right now. Chacin has been fantastic this season, too, after being a virtual afterthought just a couple seasons ago in Colorado.
