St. Louis Cardinals
The Cardinals’ starting rotation has put up decent numbers, in terms of the runs it has allowed. It hasn’t thrown many innings, however. In sixteen starts this season, the starters have covered less than 80 innings, which comes out to under five innings per start.
Of course, the trend across baseball is changing. It is no longer necessary for a starter to go into the sixth or seventh innings, though plenty of guys still do it. And the way St. Louis’ rotation is constructed, it would certainly like these guys to go deeper into games.

The bullpen has been good, though, especially Jon Gant, Jordan Hicks, Dominic Leone, and Mike Mayers. The offense is the real strong point on the team, however.
Even with Paul Goldschmidt struggling to hit for average in the early going, the Cardinals have five guys in the middle of the lineup with an OPS+ over 100. Tyler O’Neil hit his first home run of the season in the Mexico Series and it was a shot to left-center.
Milwaukee Brewers
Milwaukee jumped on Dakota Hudson in the second inning for six runs and ran away to a 10–7 win on Monday in game one of this series. Christian Yelich took extra batting practice before the game and homered three times en route to seven RBIs.
But Freddie Peralta couldn’t get through the fourth inning himself so Milwaukee’s bullpen had to do some heavy lifting in the win, six relievers combining to finish the final five-and-a-third innings, including Josh Hader, who struck out the side but gave up a run in the final inning.

Corbin Burnes hasn’t fully adapted to life as a full-time starter yet. He’s struck out 21 batters in three starts and walked just six but that’s the good. He’s also given up three homers in each of his three starts and has an ERA in the double-digits entering Wednesday’s start.
He struck out a dozen in five innings the first time he faced the Cardinals this season but also gave up those three homers and four runs in all. He didn’t factor into the decision.

I actually believe in Burnes’ ability and think he’ll put it together eventually to become a valuable starting pitcher for Milwaukee this season. I’ll take the Brewers to win straight-up.
